Excerpt from The Natural History of Immortality "We assume, not that we are intruding by our own reason into the awful secrets of the Divine nature, but that God has been graciously pleased to reveal His nature and His will to us, in a certain measure, and under certain limitations ... the Christian faith reveals the profoundest truths ever opened to human ken, those who reject such an illumination must condemn themselves to a proportionately profound darkness." - Prebendary Wace, The Foundations of Faith, Bampton Lectures, pp. 66, 67. "Thought is never satisfied with what it has gained, nor has it ever to weep because there are no new realms to conquer. Like the gods of the Indian legend, it dives downward and soars upward for ever, and yet the reality which it surveys stretches infinitely beyond through all eternity." - Alfred Barry, D.D., D.C.L., Manifold Witness for Christ, ch. iv. p. 261. Excerpt from Science, Matter, and Immortality We suggest, then, that the great fertility of the Greek mind at this period was due chiefly to race admixture. It was simply an instance of natural eugenics - a case of germinal variations resulting in a crop of geniuses. Excerpt from Science and Immortality T is difficult for a lay individual to suppose that effort on his part can have any influence in tum ing the hearts of the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, and so in some slight degree preparing the way for the Coming of the Kingdom of Heaven upon Earth; and yet he may realise that those are his instructions, and that wonders are said to be possible if action be taken m a spirit of f a1th Consequently a steward of the mysteries of physical science may, without undue presumption, proceed to utter such thoughts as have been vouchsafed to him on topics which, however treated, are undoubtedly of the high est moment to mankind. Excerpt from The Evolution of Immortality The Creed says, I believe in the resurrection Of the body. In its earlier and more naive form it says the resurrection of the flesh. This phrase is capable of a wider and more reasonable interpretation than the words would seem to imply. Such a meaning is Very gen erally read into it. But when the phrase was formulated, it was intended to mean precisely what it says. This is the meaning which it still has for the multitude. It means that at the moment Of death the soul and body sepa rate; that the body slowly decays and is disim tegrated; that the soul goes temporarily to a place Of its own where it endures in a state of partial self-consciousness for a long but indefi nite period; that at the end of that period every body which has ever lived will be recon stituted, Of the same -matter, with member, joint, and limb restored; that each soul will be reunited to its own body; that then comes judgment, reward, and doom. Excerpt from Immortality: A Scientific Proof of Life After Death A great lawyer was engaged by a wealthy clergyman to defend a deacon who had killed a child on slight provocation. The lawyer took the case, with the understanding that the clergyman should produce evidence to prove that the deacon was innocent. This was agreed to. On the day before the trial the lawyer informed the preacher that no satisfactory evidence had been forthcoming, and that, unless something was done by daybreak, he would abandon the case. At midnight he was awakened by a frantic ringing of his door-bell. Putting his head out of the upper window, he shouted, Who's there? - The clergyman. - Well, what have you found P - I have obtained absolute proof that the deacon is innocent. - The lawyer dressed, and admitted the excited though joyous parson. Now for your evidence.-well, sir, I fell asleep, and an angel came to me, right out of Heaven, and told me the deacon was innocent. Will the angel swear to that He would if he was here. Well, get him here. Go to the clerk of the court and get a subpoena, and have that angel brought into court, and I'll do my best to clear the deacon.
