Social Protection Operational Plan 2014 2020

This operational plan provides strategic directions for Asian Development Bank (ADB) support to its developing member countries to strengthen social protection systems. It aligns ADB's 2001 Social Protection Strategy with the inclusive growth agenda of Strategy 2020. The operational plan supports the development and integration of social protection components in key sectors, and institutional capacity building. It also promotes knowledge sharing, partnerships, and South-South cooperation on monitoring and reporting on social protection programs and trends in the Asia and Pacific region.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is committed to develop and update a comprehensive set of comparable and accessible data to help measure performance of social protection programs in Asia. The Social Protection Indicator (SPI) report presents data on government social protection programs collected from 25 countries in Asia---while a companion publication covers the 13 countries in the Pacific. This report is an update of The Social Protection Index: Assessing Results for Asia and the Pacific published by ADB in 2013. It helps monitor and assess the nature of governments' social insurance, social assistance, and labor market programs in Asia.

More than a decade has passed since the publication of the series entitled Social Analysis of Agriculture and Rural Investment Projects, which comprises three complementary manuals – the Manager’s, Practitioner’s and Field guides. During this time, conflict, climate change and economic downturns have been driving up poverty, hunger, and socioeconomic inequalities, reducing the resilience of agrifood systems. In response, the FAO Investment Centre has updated the Social Analysis guides to address the evolving and volatile rural transformation context, providing programme managers, practitioners and field workers with a set of enhanced tools for the design, implementation and evaluation of inclusive investments in agrifood systems. Today’s investments must prioritize more demand-driven, people-centred, culturally sensitive and locally owned sustainable approaches, with increased attention to reducing gender and other inequalities. Operationalizing these principles contributes to FAO’s and financing agencies’ objectives of ending poverty, improving food security and nutrition, and reducing inequalities. The goal of the updated guides is to support investments that contribute to inclusive, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems, aligned with the outcomes of the UN Food Systems Summit, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the core principle of leaving no one behind. This publication is part of the Investment Toolkits series under the FAO Investment Centre's Knowledge for Investment (K4I) series. The contents of this publication have been developed into three e-learning courses, which are accessible for free through the FAO E-learning Academy.

The 2015 Development Efectiveness Review (DEfR) is the ninth in a series of yearly reports by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) on its performance in achieving the priorities of Strategy 2020, its long-term strategic framework for 2008-2020. The 2015 DEfR tracks recent development progress in Asia and the Paciic, assesses ADB’s development efectiveness, and identiies areas where ADB’s performance needs to be strengthened.

This book is a history of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), a multilateral development bank established 50 years ago to serve Asia and the Pacific. Focusing on the region’s economic development, the evolution of the international development agenda, and the story of ADB itself, this book raises several key questions: What are the outstanding features of regional development to which ADB had to respond? How has the bank grown and evolved in changing circumstances? How did ADB’s successive leaders promote reforms while preserving continuity with the efforts of their predecessors? ADB has played an important role in the transformation of Asia and the Pacific the past 50 years. As ADB continues to evolve and adapt to the region’s changing development landscape, the experiences highlighted in this book can provide valuable insight on how best to serve Asia and the Pacific in the future.

The 2013 Development Effectiveness Review (DEfR) is the seventh annual performance review of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the first to apply the revised corporate results framework. The DEfR uses the 89 performance indicators of the revised framework to assess progress in implementing Strategy 2020, ADB's long-term strategic framework. It evaluates ADB's strengths and identifies areas where performance needs to be improved. The findings of the 2013 DEfR will inform actions to improve ADB's performance.

This publication outlines the performance of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) in achieving the goals of Strategy 2030, the institution’s long-term strategic framework. It is the 14th in the series of annual reports that tracks development progress in Asia and the Pacific, assesses ADB's development effectiveness, and identifies areas where the institution's performance needs to be strengthened.

This publication examines the need to expand social protection coverage of the informal sector to support working age productivity, reduce vulnerability, and improve economic opportunity. Case studies from Bangladesh, the People's Republic of China, India, Indonesia, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Thailand offer suggestions to close social protection gaps and recommend policy solutions to create equitable and inclusive social protection programs for informal workers.

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has issued its Sustainability Report every 2 years since 2007. For 2015, the Sustainability Report highlights the sustainability of ADB’s investments and organizational activities during 2013–2014. A separate detailed Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) index contains the responses of ADB to standard and specific material disclosures in the GRI’s G4 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines and G4 Financial Services Sector Guidelines. The Sustainability Report focuses on (1) ADB's investments in poverty reduction and inclusive economic growth, environment and climate change, regional integration, and infrastructure; (2) ADB's private sector, finance and knowledge partnerships, and governance and safeguard matters; and (3) ADB's human resource activities, environmental footprint, and community activities as topics that are material to ADB's stakeholders in a sustainability context.
