Excerpt from Sermons on Selected Lessons of the New Testament, Vol. 1 The Sermons of S. Augustine, besides their other excellencies, furnish a beautiful picture of perhaps the deepest and most powerful mind of the Western Church adapting itself to the little ones of Christ. In them, he who has furnished the mould for all the most thoughtful minds for fourteen hundred years, is seen forming with loving tenderness the babes in Christ. Very touching is the child-like simplicity, with which he gradually leads them through what to them were difficulties, watching all the while whether he made himself clear to them, keeping up their attention, pleased at their understanding, dreading their approbation, and leading them off from himself to some practical result. Very touching the tenderness with which he at times reproves, the allowance which he makes for human infirmities and for those in secular life, if they will not make their infirmities their boast, or in allowed duties and indulgences forget God. But his very simplicity precludes the necessity of any preface. His Sermons explain themselves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The World's Great Sermons, Vol. 1 of 10 The aim in preparing this work has been to bring together the best examples of the products of the pulpit through the Christian centuries, and to present these masterpieces in attractive and convenient form. It is believed that they will be found valuable as instruction to ministers of to-day. They should also be helpful to others who, tho not preachers, yet seek reading of this kind for the upbuilding of personal character and for strengthening their Christian faith. The sermons have been chosen in some cases for their literary and rhetorical excellences, but in every case for their helpfulness in solving some of the problems of Christian living. Excerpt from Select Sermons It is in a frame of mind like this, that the gospel meets us, and assures us, that full provision is made here for the supply of all the wants of our spiritual and immortal na ture. The Holy Scriptures prove, in the most Copious and conclusive manner, that Jesus Christ made a true and pro per atonement for human guilt; that, in the strictest and most absolute sense of the terms, he died in the room of sinners; that his sacrifice was an ample satisfaction to the law which man had violated, and made it consistent with the perfections and government of Jehovah to pardon our transgressions, and to receive us into his favour. This atonement forms the grand distinction between Christian ity and all other religions. We recognise no religion as of divine authority, which does not point to the cross, and say, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sins of the world 1. Excerpt from Sermons, Vol. 1 of 3 The author cannot fail to recollect with gratitude, the unexpectedly rapid sale of a former volume, and the many favourable acknowledgments he has received from its readers. though repeatedly urged to issue a new edition of that volume, or other fruits of his pen, he has hitherto declined, except occasionally to publish sermons and essays in some, of, the current periodicals. But since his health has failed, and he can no longer stand in the holy place, rather than bear the agony of living to no purpose, he has summoned resolution, with the encourage ment and aid of kind friends, to arrange and issue these three volumes, including some.
