The synthesis of macrocycles is an art in itself. Template-controlled synthesis provides elegant access to fascinating macrocyclic structures. Polyazamacrocycles, crown ethers, cryptands, rotaxanes, knots -- the range of macrocyclic compounds is as broad as their potential application as molecular switches, in ion exchange, electron transfer or catalysis. This book provides authoritative information on all aspects of template-controlled macrocyclizations. It covers in depth the current state of research on template processes - novel synthetic techniques and mechanistic approaches. The critical discussion of the diverse synthetic routes includes the detailed characterization of the broad variety of macrocyclic products. References to applications of macrocyclic compounds and over 1,500 citations make this handbook an indispensable tool for chemists in academia and industry. Researchers in organic and supramolecular chemistry, biotechnology, and inorganic chemistry will find inspiration for the design, synthesis, and myriad uses of new synthetic macrocycles.

Macrocycles are an important class of reagents in modern analytical chemistry because of their high selectivity. Macrocyclic chemistry is still a relatively new field, but as research progresses, the volume of data about macrocycles and their analytical applications continues to grow at a breathtaking pace. Written for analytical chemists who need to keep abreast of state-of-the-art applied macrocyclic chemistry, this groundbreaking volume presents the findings of chemists from around the world who have devoted themselves to the study of macrocycles. Macrocyclic Compounds in Analytical Chemistry covers all classes of macrocyclic compounds. Two chapters that will be of general interest across all analytical specialties are those treating the synthesis of macrocyclic compounds and complexation and selectivity. Other topics covered in detail are: Solvent extractionseparation and subsequent determination of elementsfrom crown ethers and alkali cations to porphyrins and transition metals Sorption and chromatographyincludes examples from most chromatographic techniques Ion-selective electrodes Separation and determination of organic compoundscovers both fundamental and analytical uses of host-guest complexation Macrocyclic Compounds in Analytical Chemistry is a valuable reference for research and practicing analytical chemists as well as inorganic chemists specializing in hydrometallurgy and extraction. It will also be of interest to organic and theoretical chemists interested in the practical applications of organic, synthetic macrocyles. This is the first book devoted to the macrocyclic chemistry research conducted between the 1960s and the 1990s. Covering all classes of macrocyclic compounds, this groundbreaking volume presents the findings of chemists from around the world who have devoted themselves to the study of macrocycles. An indispensable reference for research and practicing analytical chemists, Macrocyclic Compounds in Analytical Chemistry reports previously unpublished findings concerning a wide range of topics, including: Macrocyclic synthesis Complexation and selectivity Solvent extraction and separation Sorption and chromatography Ion-selective electrodes Separation and determination of organic compounds

Drug Design, Volume VIII covers a critical review and new extensions of quantitative methods in drug design, the design of particular types of agents, such as synthetic sweeteners, and selective ion binding compounds. The book discusses the advances in the methodology of quantitative drug design; the application of pattern recognition to drug design; and the design of controlled drug delivery systems. The text also describes the use of receptor binding as a tool in the development of new bioactive steroids; the design of synthetic sweeteners; and the prospective assessment of environmental effects of chemicals. The design of selective ion binding macrocyclic compounds and their biological applications are also encompassed. Chemists, pharmacologists, biochemists, and people involved in drug design and manufacture will find the book invaluable.

After 50 years from the discovery of crown-ethers, macrocyclic hosts continue to play a pivotal role in supramolecular chemistry. The presence of a cavity makes them ideal candidates to perform supramolecular functions such as catalysis, molecular and biomolecular recognition, sensing, self-assembly, and synthesis of interpenetrated architectures. In addition, thanks to their synthetic versatility, the macrocycles are considered useful platforms for the design of more elaborated structures for the self-assembly of supramolecular polymers and for applications in biomimetic chemistry. These aspects have stimulated the creativeness of the scientists that in this way started imagining novel macrocyclic structures with the aim to perform ever more advanced supramolecular functions and properties. Thus, in the last years, in addition to the most innovative aspects regarding the "old" macrocycles, much attention has also been focused on the synthesis of new macrocycles. These studies have led to the discovery of novel classes of molecules such as pillararenes, biphenarenes, calixnaphthalenes, large resorcinarenes and a wide class of heteracalixarenes, coronarenes, which have found application in several areas of supramolecular chemistry. The aim of this Research Topic is to outline the most innovative researches regarding the chemistry of macrocyclic compounds and their supramolecular properties.
