Irrational Judgments examines the close friendship and significant exchange of ideas between Eva Hesse (1936–1970) and Sol LeWitt (1928–2007) in New York City during the 1960s. Taking its title from LeWitt’s statement “Irrational judgments lead to new experience,” this book examines the breakthroughs of the artists’ intertwined careers, offering a new understanding of minimal, post-minimal, and conceptual art amid the era’s political and social upheavals. Kirsten Swenson offers the first in-depth discussion of the early critical developments of each artist: LeWitt’s turn from commercial design to fine art, and Hesse’s move from expressionist painting to reliefs and sculpture. Bringing together a wealth of documents, interviews, and images—many published here for the first time—this handsome publication presents an insightful account of the artists’ influence on and support for each other’s pursuit of an experimental practice. Swenson’s analysis expands our understanding of the artists’ ideas, the importance of their work, and, more broadly, the relationship of the 1960s New York art world to gender politics, the Vietnam War, and the city itself.

The International Masters at KU Leuven draws students from all over the world to study on its English language course. Part of the attraction is the opportunity to study in Gent, a beautiful historic city famed for its architecture. Much remains of the medieval city that is characterised by tightly packed window-wall façades. In devising the Building Technology Workshop, I was keen to focus attention on this extraordinary resource: to closely observe, record and represent how a traditional European city is made. The requirements to draw by hand and make physical models sought to exercise the connection between eye and hand which can be of such great use to architects. The variety of the workshop output is testament to Gent's heterogeneity and an equally delightful introduction to each student's way of seeing.

This book examines over 30 bathroom designs from around the world, each one designed by a notable architect and created especially for a specific residence. For each bathroom there is an image of the whole house (placing it in context and providing a flavor of the general design style), images of the bathroom, and a floor plan showing its relation to the other spaces. The pages that follow are entirely devoted to detailed drawings showing the arrangement and construction of the bathroom, in particular sections, elevations, and construction details of all the fitted units and joinery. These drawings are all made to a consistent style and to a set number of scales for easy comparison. Dimensions are also included with the drawings as well as details of fitted units (baths, showers, basins, etc.). The credits for the projects include contact details of suppliers so that the exact materials and fixtures can be sourced. The projects are arranged into chapters by type of dominant material: glass, steel and stone. The book will be invaluable for all practicing architects as well as those considering commissioning a high-quality bathroom for their own house.
