Starting with the basic notions and facts of the mathematical theory of waves illustrated by numerous examples, exercises, and methods of solving typical problems Chapters 1 & 2 show e.g. how to recognize the hyperbolicity property, find characteristics, Riemann invariants and conservation laws for quasilinear systems of equations, construct and analyze solutions with weak or strong discontinuities, and how to investigate equations with dispersion and to construct travelling wave solutions for models reducible to nonlinear evolution equations. Chapter 3 deals with surface and internal waves in an incompressible fluid. The efficiency of mathematical methods is demonstrated on a hierarchy of approximate submodels generated from the Euler equations of homogeneous and non-homogeneous fluids. The self-contained presentations of the material is complemented by 200+ problems of different level of difficulty, numerous illustrations, and bibliographical recommendations.

First organized in 1981, the WASCOM conference to bring together researchers and scientists from all over the world to discuss problems, promote collaborations and shape future directions for research in the field of stability and wave propagation in continuous media. This book constitutes the proceedings of the 11th edition of the conference, the first of the third millennium. The main topics are: (1) Linear and nonlinear hyperbolic equations, conservation laws and specific aspects of wave propagation; (2) stability of systems of PDEs, with particular reference to those of fluid and solid mechanics; (3) extended thermodynamics and passage from microscopic to macroscopic description of the medium for systems characterized also by inelastic interactions at the kinetic scale. The proceedings have been selected for coverage in:• Index to Scientific & Technical Proceedings (ISTP CDROM version / ISI Proceedings)

Physics of Continuous Media: A Collection of Problems with Solutions for Physics Students contains a set of problems with detailed and rigorous solutions. Aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate students in physics and applied mathematics, the book is a complementary text for standard courses on the physics of continuous media. With its assortment of standard problems for beginners, variations on a theme, and original problems based on new trends and theories in the physics under investigation, this book aids in the understanding of practical aspects of the subject. Topics discussed include vectors, tensors, and Fourier transformations; dielectric waves in media; natural optical activity; Cherenkov radiation; nonlinear interaction of waves; dynamics of ideal fluids and the motion of viscous fluids; convection; turbulence and acoustic and shock waves; the theory of elasticity; and the mechanics of liquid crystals.

This monograph is devoted to problems of propagation and stability of linear and nonlinear waves in continuous media with complex structure. It considers the different media, such as solid with cavities, preliminary deformed disperse medium, solid with porosity filled by the electrically conductive and non-conductive liquid, magnetoelastic, piezo-semiconductors, crystals with dislocations, composites with inclusions, an electrically conductive asymmetrical liquid, a mixture of gas with a drop liquid. The book also considers the propagation of a laser beam through a two-level medium. The presented results are based on methods of evolution and modulation equations that were developed by the authors. The book is intended for scientific and technical researchers, students and post-graduate students specializing in mechanics of continuous media, physical acoustics, and physics of the solid state.

In view of the rapid growth in both experimental and theoretical studies of multiphoton processes and multiphoton spectroscopy of atoms, ions and molecules in many interdisciplinary fields, an Advanced Series that contains review papers readable not only to active researchers in these areas but also to those who are not experts in the field but intend to enter the field is very necessary. This series attempts to serve this purpose. Each review article is written in a self-contained manner by the experts in the area so that the readers can grasp the knowledge in the area without too much preparation. The collection of topics in this volume will prove useful, valuable and stimulating not only to active researchers but also to other scientists in the areas of biology, chemistry, materials science and physics.
