War Letters of Fallen Englishmen was published following the war in order to remind the living of those who were lost in the name of the British crown--brothers, husbands, fathers, sons. This collection provides, in the very words of those who participated and died in combat, the closest approximation possible to the experience of war. Carefully selected from thousands of letters, those in this collection are poignant, powerful, and graphic and were chosen for their depth of perception, the intensity of their descriptions, and their messages to future generations.

Excerpt from War Letters From the Living Dead Man: Written Down In the Spring of 1914 there was published in London and New York a book of mine called "Letters From a Living Dead Man," being automatic writings from an American Judge and teacher of philosophy who had been known to his intimate friends as "X." There were circumstances connected with the writing of that book, explained in some detail in the Introduction, which made any other hypothesis than that of genuine communication from the other world seem untenable to me. It began, for instance, some days before I knew in Paris that my friend had died on the Pacific coast of America. More than eight million young men perished during the First World War—a staggering figure. The natural reaction to such a great loss of humanity was to forget the individuals and recast the conflict into one of faceless armies and battles commemorated in stone and metal monuments. War Letters of Fallen Englishmen was published following the war in order to remind the living of those who were lost in the name of the British crown—brothers, husbands, fathers, sons. This edition contains a new foreword by the distinguished World War I historian Jay Winter.

Excerpt from The Soldier's Progress, From the War Letters of Carnegie Tech Men Early this morning, some thirty moments before the sun, I dressed and Slipped from the house to go for a dip in the pit, an abandoned stone-quarry nearby. It is about a third full of spring water, twenty or thirty feet deep, and blue-green as only spring water can be. After my plunge I scaled the cliff-like walls naked and perched high on a stone, waiting the sun. I busied myself by drawing on the dew-covered leaves of a mullein the initials of all my friends. That mullein, a lusty one, did not have leaves enough for all the people I could think of with pleasure. True, some people need several leaves, for they contain many lovable persons in one. Then the sun came up, a magnificent rose of yellow. With all of this I am back at home writing my good-byes before any of my lazy family are apparent.
