Invasive fungal diseases have increased many fold over the past 50 years. Current treatment regimens typically require prolonged administration of antifungal medications that can have significant toxicity. Moreover, our present potent antifungal armamentarium fails to eradicate fungal pathogens from certain compromised hosts. Additionally, invasive fungal diseases continue to have unacceptably high mortality rates. A growing body of work has focused on the utility of vaccines and/or immunotherapy as a powerful tool in combating mycoses, either for the active treatment, as an adjuvant, or in the prevention of specific fungal pathogens. This Research Topic will detail the exciting progress in developing vaccines and immunotherapy for fungi.

Medical mycology refers to the study of fungi that produce disease in humans and other animals, and of the diseases they produce, their ecology, and their epidemiology. This new edition has been fully revised to provide microbiologists with the latest information on fungal infections, covering the entire spectrum of different types of infection, and therapeutic modalities. Beginning with a general overview explaining morphology, taxonomy, and diagnosis, the following sections cover the different categories of fungal infection including superficial cutaneous mycoses, subcutaneous mycoses, systemic mycoses and opportunistic mycoses. A complete section is dedicated to pseudofungal infections. The highly illustrated text concludes with a detailed appendices section and each chapter features key references for further reading. Key points Fully revised, fourth edition providing latest information on the diagnosis and management of fungal infections Covers the entire spectrum of mycoses Highly illustrated with clinical photographs and figures Previous edition (9788188039780) published in 2009

Fungal and parasitic diseases affect more than one billion people across the globe. This is one-sixth of the world´s population, mostly located in developing countries. The lack of effective and safe treatments, combined with inefficient diagnosis, leads to serious chronic illness or even death. There is a discrepancy between the rate of drug resistance and the development of new medicines. Formulation of antifungal and antiparasitic drugs adapted to different administration routes is challenging, bearing in mind the poor water solubility that limits their bioavailability and efficacy. There is an unmet clinical need to develop vaccines, novel formulations and drug delivery strategies that can improve the bioavailability and therapeutic effects by enhancing their dissolution, increasing their chemical potency, stabilizing the drug and targeting high concentrations of the drug to infection sites. This Special Issue includes ten research articles of antifungal and antiparasitic drug delivery systems.

Rang and Dale’s Pharmacology is internationally acknowledged as the core textbook for students of pharmacology, and has provided accessible, up-to-date information on drugs and their mechanism of action for more than 30 years. Now in its tenth edition, it has been updated to include important new drugs such as gene therapies, personalised medicines and the new wave of RNA drugs. However it has not lost any of the elements that have contributed to its popularity, such as color coding and illustrations, making it reader-friendly while comprehensively covering the depth of detail required. This essential book is recommended as the first-choice undergraduate text for science and medical students and junior doctors and will also be useful for students in other professional disciplines such as pharmacy, veterinary medicine and nursing. Comprehensive information on drug mechanisms, basic physiology and biochemistry, and underlying pathophysiology of disease – suitable for students from many disciplines Clear figures to aid understanding, including data figures as well as mechanistic diagrams, Key points box summaries, clinical boxes and colour-coded chapters help to master difficult concepts Emphasis on therapeutic drugs to help apply theory to practice Over 150 questions and 12 clinical cases to test your knowledge New chapters on drugs and the eye and the pharmacological management of headache Revised information on biopharmaceuticals (including RNA drugs), antivirals (including Covid-19 therapies) as well as general principles of antimicrobial therapy. This volume scopes several aspects of non-conventional yeast research prepared by the leading specialists in the field. An introduction on taxonomy and systematics enhances the reader’s knowledge on yeasts beyond established ones such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Biotechnological approaches that involve fungal utilization of unusual substrates, production of biofuels and useful chemicals as citric acid, glutathione or erythritol are discussed. Further, strategies for metabolic engineering based on knowledge on regulation of gene expression as well as sensing and signaling pathways are presented. The book targets researchers and advanced students working in Microbiology, Microbial Biotechnology and Biochemistry.
