The TMS 2016 Annual Meeting Supplemental Proceedings is a collection of papers from the TMS 2016 Annual Meeting & Exhibition, held February 14-18 in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. The papers in this volume represent 21 symposia from the meeting. This volume, along with the other proceedings volumes published for the meeting, and archival journals, such as Metallurgical and Materials Transactions and Journal of Electronic Materials, represents the available written record of the 67 symposia held at TMS2016. This proceedings volume contains both edited and unedited papers; the unedited papers have not necessarily been reviewed by the symposium organizers and are presented “as is.” The opinions and statements expressed within the papers are those of the individual authors only, and no confirmations or endorsements are intended or implied.

Characterization is an important and fundamental step in material research before and after processing. This bookfocuses on the characterization of minerals, metals, and materials as well as the application of characterization results on the processing of these materials. This collection presents the papers presented in the symposium on extraction of rare metals as well as rare extraction processing techniques used in metal production. Paper topics include the extraction and processing of elements like antimony, arsenic, gold, indium, palladium, platinum, rare earth metals including yttrium and neodymium, titanium, tungsten, and vanadium. The rare processing techniques covered include direct extraction process for rare earth element recovery; biosorption of precious metals; fluorination behavior of uranium and zirconium mixture of fuel debris treatment; and recovery of valuable components of commodity metals such as zinc, nickel, and metals from slag.

Proceedings from a 2016 sustainability symposium Information from REWAS 2016 proceedings were collected and published in REWAS 2016: Towards Materials Resource Sustainability. This collection covers the proceedings of the symposium sponsored by the Recycling and Environmental Technologies Committee; the Materials and Society Committee; the Extracting & Processing Division; and the Light Metals Division of the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society. Topics covered include: enabling and understanding the sustainability related to ferrous and non-ferrous metals processing; batteries; rare earth element applications; and building materials. At REWAS 2016, materials professionals exchanged ideas with other researchers and stakeholders to outline a path toward a resource-efficient society.

The Magnesium Technology Symposium, the event on which this collection is based, is one of the largest yearly gatherings of magnesium specialists in the world. Papers represent all aspects of the field, ranging from primary production to applications to recycling. Moreover, papers explore everything from basic research findings to industrialization. Magnesium Technology 2016 covers a broad spectrum of current topics, including alloys and their properties; cast products and processing; wrought products and processing; forming, joining, and machining; corrosion and surface finishing; ecology; and structural applications. In addition, there is coverage of new and emerging applications. The collection includes more than 50 papers.

Building Code Requirements and Specification for Masonry Structures contains two standards and their commentaries: Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures designated as TMS 402-16 (and formerly designated as TMS 402/ACI 530/ASCE 5) and Specification for Masonry Structures designated as TMS 602-16 (and formerly designated as TMS 602/ACI 530.1/ASCE 6). These standards are produced by The Masonry's Society's Committee TMS 402/602 and were formerly developed through the joint sponsorship of The Masonry Society (TMS), the American Concrete Institute (ACI), and the Structural Engineering Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers (SEI/ASCE) through the Masonry Standards Joint Committee (MSJC). In late 2013, ACI and ASCE relinquished their rights to these standards to TMS who has served as the lead sponsor of the Standards for a number of years. Since then, the Committee has operated solely under the sponsorship of The Masonry Society, and the Committee's name, and the names of the standards, were re-designated.The Code covers the design and construction of masonry structures while the Specification is concerned with minimum construction requirements for masonry in structures. Some of the topics covered in the Code are: definitions, contract documents; quality assurance; materials; placement of embedded items; analysis and design; strength and serviceability; flexural and axial loads; shear; details and development of reinforcement; walls; columns; pilasters; beams and lintels; seismic design requirements; glass unit masonry; veneers; and autoclaved aerated concrete masonry. An empirical design method and a prescriptive method applicable to buildings meeting specific location and construction criteria are also included. The Specification covers subjects such as quality assurance requirements for materials; the placing, bonding and anchoring of masonry; and the placement of grout and of reinforcement. This Specification is meant to be modified and referenced in the Project Manual. The Code is written as a legal document and the Specification as a master specification required by the Code. The commentaries present background details, committee considerations, and research data used to develop the Code and Specification. The Commentaries are not mandatory and are for information of the user only.

This collection presents papers on the science, engineering, and technology of shape castings, with contributions from researchers worldwide. Among the topics that are addressed are structure-property-performance relationships, modeling of casting processes, and the effect of casting defects on the mechanical properties of cast alloys.
