"There are about 30,000 letters in Claydon House from the seventeenth century. My mother, Margaret Lady Verney, brilliantly created from these letters the story of the Verneys and in 1894 she published the result in four volumes. In 1905 these were reduced to two. This book is an effort further to curtail the memoirs and letters into one volume. In the postcript the story of Claydon House and the Verneys is recorded up to 1900."--Preface. The four volume work was actually begun by Lady Frances Parthenope Verney and finished by Lady Margaret Verney. Lady Margaret compiled most of the last three volumes and arranged the first for publication; many of the letters which served as the major source for all four volumes had been gathered and some- what arranged by Lady Frances.
