Because of this significant supply, the auction process through which the rights to harvest National Forest timber are transferred to private firms has received extensive study in the economics and forestry literature. Excerpt from Timber Resources for America's Future The report of the Timber Resource Review is in the nature of a State-of - the-union message by the Forest Service on our national timber supplies. This comprehensive appraisal of the timber situation in the United States was started early in 1952. About a year and a half was devoted to planning the project; a year to field surveys and collection of data; a year to compila tion, interpretation, and preparation of the pre liminary report; and another year and a half to review and revision of the preliminary report and preparation of this final report. The Timber Resource Review is the latest in a series of overall timber appraisals in which the Forest Service has shared. The most recent one prior to this study was in 1945. One of the unique features of the present undertaking is that it was planned and executed in the field with the wide spread collaboration of a great number of States, forest industries, and individuals. Although this has engendered some delays, they have been more than offset by better planning, by more intensive surveys than the Forest Service could have under taken by itself, and it is hoped by more widespread understanding and acceptance of the findings. Excerpt from The Timber Supply Situation in Georgia Georgia's forests was completed in 1936. During this period annual production of lumber in Georgia more than doubled. Pulp wood production jumped from cords in 1937 to million cords in 1954. Georgia now produces more pulpwood and lumber than any other State in the South. Since 1936, over 16 million acres of forest land have been put under organized fire protection. Pine trees have been planted on more than one-half million acres. About 8 million acres of forest land have been put under management. During the 19 years that the Naval Stores Conservation Program has been in operation, turpentining practices have steadily improved. To get an accurate measure of the impact of these events on Geor gia's timber supply, a second inventory of the State's forests was begun in July 1950. In November 1953 the last of ground survey plots was taken. The findings of this second survey furnish the back ground for an understanding of the present forest conditions in Georgia and focus attention upon the principal forest problems and what needs to be done to solve them. No attempt is made to fully evaluate the use of forests for wildlife, recreation, or grazing; these uses are dis cussed only as they affect the timber supply. Excerpt from History of the Lumber Industry of America, Vol. 2 The first volume of this work was devoted to certain general subjects and to eastern Canada; this volume takes up the history of, the lumber industry of the United States in detail. An appropriate beginning is found in connection with white pine. It is possible that the first trees cut on American soil by white men were yellow pine; and during certain periods the southern wood, perhaps, contributed more largely to the export trade of the colonies and of the United States than did white pine; but the latter was earlier the basis for an industry of magnitude, and, until the close of the Nineteenth Century, furnished more than any other one species, or more than any group of related species, to the internal commerce of the country. While the southern pines were and are famous in the export trade, they supplied at home, until within a generation, hardly more than a local requirement; whereas white pine was in demand almost everywhere throughout the continent and sold in large quantities, not only in the states in which it grew but even in states which were abundantly supplied with pines of their own growth, and, furthermore, it furnished the chief building and finishing material necessary in the development of the great prairie regions west of the Mississippi River. It was the white pine that of all the timber resources of the North American continent first attracted the attention of explorers, and it was the white pine that was first the subject of Royal or legislative enactment. This volume of the History of the Lumber Industry of America is, therefore, devoted very largely to the history of the white pine industry. This history is appropriately considered in its geographical relationships, and, for the sake of convenience, a beginning is made with the white pine State farthest east - a Commonwealth known for generations as the Pine Tree State, although for more than a half century pine has been second to spruce in volume of product. Beginning with Maine, the other New Eng land states appropriately come after and then the white pine belt rs followed across New York and Pennsylvania.
