The half-metre test types are very useful at the distance of a half metre or less, but they are of very little use at one metre, and quite worthless at two, four or six metres. In skiascopy there are movements of light and shadow in the pupil that can be seen at one-half metre, which are not to be seen at one metre or any greater distance and in many eyes it is these movements, and these alone, that truly indicate the refraction of the eye.
