The widespread adoption of the Internet has transformed the ICT Sector, giving birth to what has been referred to as the New ICT Ecosystem. But how does this ecosystem work and what changes it over time? These questions are explored in this paper, using some of the insights of Schumpeterian evolutionary economics. To summarise, it is shown that innovation, the endogenous creation of new knowledge in the ecosystem, emerges from six key symbiotic relationships. These relationships are shaped both by competition and by institutions which include financial institutions, regulation and competition law, standardisation and universities. It is these processes of innovation that make the New ICT Ecosystem the restless, incessantly changing system that it is. This paper comes from the author's forthcoming book, The New ICT Ecosystem: Implications for Europe.

Martin Fransman presents a new approach to understanding how innovation happens, who makes it happen, and the helps and hindrances. Looking at innovation in real-time under uncertainty, he develops the idea of an 'innovation ecosystem', i.e. a system of interrelated players and processes that jointly make innovation happen. Examples include: how companies like Amazon, Google, Facebook, Apple, AT&T, and Huawei interact in the ICT Ecosystem; four innovations that changed the world - the transistor, microprocessor, optical fibre, and the laser; the causes of the telecoms boom and bust of the early 1990s that influenced the Great Recession from 2007; and the usefulness of the idea of innovation ecosystems for Chinese policy makers. By delving into the complex determinants of innovation this book provides a deeper, more rigorous understanding of how it happens. It will appeal to economists, social scientists, business people, policy makers, and anyone interested in innovation and entrepreneurship.

This book examines and critiques classical approaches to strategic analysis, whilst exploring alternative methods which utilise ecosystem and platform concepts, as well as chaos and complexity theories. The innovative study provides a critique of the neoclassical Newtonian school of strategy, and proves it to be largely inappropriate as a decision-making methodology in today’s internet-based market. By developing a new biological hydrothermal vent model in which analogical comparisons are made with the Information Communication Technology (ICT) sector, the chapters challenge existing paradigms of competitive advantage and analyse the extent to which the Internet can be considered to be an ecosystem in its own right. The Internet as a Technology-Based Eco-System offers a range of alternative models and analytical frameworks for the analysis of internet-based technology companies in the twenty-first century, creating a valuable tool for students and academics undertaking research in strategy, technology and electronic engineering.

This New Global Business model (NEWGIBM) book describes the background, theory references, case studies, results, and learning imparted by the NEWGIBM project, which is supported by ICT, to a research group from 2005 to 2011. New Global ICT-Based Business Models is a result of the efforts and collaborative work between SMEs, consultancies, and researchers across various lines of business, competences, and research domains. It commences with a theoretical discussion of the business model and its innovative literature, and it explains how this was a collaborative study by researchers from three Danish Universities. The book describes and analyzes how NEWGIBM was implemented in SMEs in different industrial companies/networks. Based on this effort, the researchers try to describe and analyze the current context, the experience of NEWGIBM, and finally, the emerging scenarios of NEWGIBM. This NEWGIBM book serves as a part of the final evaluation and documentation of the NEWGIBM project. It is supported by results from the following projects: M-commerce, Global Innovation, Global Ebusiness & M-commerce, The Blue Ocean project, International Center for Innovation and Women in Business, and NEFFICS, which provided information about the innovating business models funded by Ministry of Science and Innovation Denmark, Ministry of Economics Denmark, EU Social Fund, EU KASK program, and EU 7 Framework program Internet of Things.
