Excerpt from The Gun and Its Development This book, first published in 1881, was written with a view to supplying such information relative to fire-arms as is most frequently sought by a sportsman Owing to numerous recent inventions it became necessary not only to rearrange the matter, but to rewrite the book when the sixth edition was needed. The author thanks those critics who have pointed out literal faults in this book, and he has done his best to remove ambiguities and correct errors. He sees no reason to make any alteration of importance, and, in matters of Opinion, adheres to what he has already written, so that this ninth edition is, with the exception of a few minor alterations and some additional pages upon Gun Trials, Single Trigger mechanisms, Miniature rifles and the Rifle Club movement, practically a reprint of the last one. In the arrangement of this treatise the author has followed a method which appears to him the best suited to convey an accurate idea of different small arms and of their capabilities under varying conditions. From the nature of the subjects treated it is impossible that the book could be wholly free from technicalities, but no endeavour has been spared to make the contents readable intricate mechanisms, instead of being described in detail, have been freely illustrated; technical data are presented in tabular form, and theories relative to the action of explosives, the flight of bullets and shot pellets, have been concisely explained. The thanks of the author are due to many sportsmen and others who by their investigations and experience have added to his knowledge of guns and gunnery possibly in some instances the sources upon which the author has drawn have not been acknowledged, but the omissions are unintentional. Excerpt from The Gun Book: For Boys and Men When man or boy becomes interested enough in firearms to want to know what sort of an instrument the gun really is, and how it performs its work, he is not made much the wiser by reading that: "A gun is a thermodynamic machine by which the potential energy of the explosive is converted into the kinetic energy of the projectile." Nor will the curious-minded beginner get much useful information on the subject by questioning poorly informed adults who may tell him, as they did the author in his youth, that the bullet does not "get up speed" until it is some distance from the muzzle; or that the missile does not begin to drop in obedience to gravity until late in its flight. Such misinformation takes on so many forms that the more of it the inquirer listens to the greater grows his bewilderment. Between these two extremes of overexactness buried in mysterious scientific terms, and of false theories carelessly uttered, the seeker for light on the elementary problems of gunnery suffers almost as much today as he ever did. Excerpt from Gun Making: In the United States As a preface to that which follows, it is proper to state that the conclusions and opinions expressed, except when otherwise stated, represent the opinions of the writer and have no official sanction. The subject - matter aims to be a history of the progress of gun making and gun trials in the United States, especially with reference to the part taken therein by the War Department, in the past fifteen years or from the date of the Heavy Gun Board of 1872; and prior to that of such matters as appear to have a bearing on current questions of gun construction. The prominent part taken by the Navy Depart ment in being the pioneer of built-up forged steel guns - thanks to its energetic efforts backed up by liberal and progressive Naval Com mittees of Congress - deserves the fullest recognition, and if a com paratively brief mention is made of the operations of that Depart ment in general it will be understood as due to the force of circum stances which render even a somewhat detailed account of matters with which the writer is most familiar a matter requiring all the time and attention at his disposal. The data given have been collected from official reports or otherwise, with every regard for correctness. The chronological order adopted for this description of events has led to a much more extended treatise than was at first intended and perhaps also to repetitions which may appear unnecessary but this order having an advantage in respect to the time necessary to devote to the preparation of the paper has been adhered to. Excerpt from The Story of the Guns In addition to personal observation of the results of experiments with artillery, my information has been drawn from such records as are accessible to the public papers laid before Parliament, evidence taken by suc cessive Committees of the House of Commons, dis eussions in the theatres of scientific institutions, addresses delivered to large assemblies on special occa sions, reviews and periodicals, reports of the press upon the marvellous powers of the new ordnance as displayed from time to time at various points of the coast, and the comments of writers devoted exclusively to me chamical science in its application to the art of war.
