Excerpt from The Economics of Railway Transport It is hoped that the result may be of some interest and profit to two classes of readers to economic students as exemplifying the degree' to which practice must necessarily differ from theory, the concrete from the abstract; and to railway men, as showing the operation of scientific principles in their work. Of the presence of numerous faults of omission and commission no one can be more conscious than the writer. In regard to these he would plead the exigencies of time, for this book has had to be completed within the limits of a single furlough. As to other faults which may, and no doubt will, be obvious to the experienced reader, he can say nothing save to express the hope that his work may possibly induce others of wider experience and greater leisure to enter a field which up to the present has perhaps hardly received from British writers the attention due to it. Excerpt from Elements of Railway Economics The Object of this book is to consider railways and railway business from the economic point of view. It will be well, therefore, to begin by understanding precisely what a railway is. Historically and etymologically a railway is merely a road on which rails are laid. Originally the rails, whether of stone or wood or iron, were laid flat on the surface, and vehicles with ordinary wheels were free either to use the special track or to move at large over the whole width of the road. In the next stage of development, the rails were continuous iron plates with flanges on their outer edges to confine the Wheels to the track proper. In the next stage, the rails were raised above the surface and the flange was transferred from the rails to the wheels. The railway thus became specialized it could only be used by special vehicles, and the special vehicles could no longer be used on ordinary roads. Naturally, the railway forsook the public highway and was laid on land allocated to its sole use. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Economics of Railway Transport During the early months of the present year the author gave a short course of lectures at Cambridge on "The Economics of Transport," and this volume has originated in an attempt to reproduce the substance of those lectures in some connected form. In carrying the project into execution so much has necessarily been added, subtracted, and modified that little real similarity now remains, but mention is made of this fact since it indicates not only the origin of this book but also to some extent its scope and purpose. Excerpt from Railway Economics: A Treatise on the Problem of How to Increase the Earnings of Freight Equipment Canada and Mexico, and as the average cost of old and new rolling stock was at least per car, the total cost of this equip ment was approximately and as it stands idle twenty-two hours out of each twenty-four (equalling we have nearly wastefully earning noth ing and being slowly but surely lost by decay. These facts naturally suggest the inquiry Why do these costly cars stand idle over 90% of their lives? Is it because there are more cars than is needed to carry the freight of the country?
