Excerpt from The Empire Builders and Other Poems Said the West to the East of a nation, The fruit of your loins am I, And I claim no other birthright And I own no other tie But the bond that is fixed between us And the blood that is yours and mine Yet nurture the child that is born you, Ere other arms entwine. And the West in his youthful vigor, Wrought earnestly, soon and late, As he planted the seeds of Empire, And knotted the thongs of Fate; And the East in her home at the Gateway Mused long o'er the problem deep, For the harvest was ripe to the sickle But the reapers were fast asleep! And she said, In my western vineyard, Where the hope of my future lies. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The House Building and Other Poems As a poet, happy, free; I will chant the world to Thee! Round the world rolls like a sun! To-morrows a new day begun! Life, love and jovial gaiety, Are blessings Three! Long I in my Spirit wrought - Pondered all the world in Thought - Wrestled with the Age-Desire - Passed not unscathed through the fire! Now enfranchised, happy, free: These great Three I chant with Thee! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Building of the Ship, and Other Poems Mr. Longfellow's birthplace was in a sea-port, and his youth and early manhood were passed in intimate association with sea-life. In his half-autobiographical reverie My Lost Youth he records something of the effect which these associations had upon his mind. Af terward, when living in Cambridge, he was wont to spend his summers at his cottage in Nahant. One after another there occurred to him poems which had their suggestion in sea-scenes; and in April, 1849, when cast ing about for a convenient grouping for a volume of his uncollected poems, he found that a natural one was in dicated by the double title By the Fireside and By the Seaside. There were hardly enough poems to make a satisfactory volume, and he was dispirited by his appar ent inability to write a poem of any importance. He wrote in his diary: No new thing to start the stag nant current. Oh for some great idea to refresh me! I am pondering on a continuation of Hyperion. His wish, as he records it, reminds us of the saying of Her der, a German poet, when lying wearily in sickness Give me a great thought, that I may quicken myself with it. Excerpt from My House, Chips the Builder Threw Away In 1845 I published a little volume of poems, written while engaged in my profession of Sculpture. Since then, until the past year or two, the struggle for material existence left lit tle time or strength for literary work. The main part of this book has been written during the past year, the recreation of my leisure hours. The poems are what an artist might call sketches, containing many lines which, in a more serious effort, would have been left out. Such pruning would, however, have destroyed the spontaneity of feeling under which they were written. The reader must, therefore, accept or reject them mainly for the ideas or sentiments which they imperfectly express. Excerpt from The Completion of the Spire: And Other Poems Mighty throng of people filled the streets, CD Ten thousand eyes upon the new-built spire Were fixed. Graceful and fair it rose Above the massive portals and arched entrances Of Copenhagen's far-famed kirk, A marvel of construction and of beauty. But a few strokes were to be added And the life-long dream of Hans the builder, Finished, would forever live in stone. But now upon the eve Of the eventful hour, The heart of Hans the builder is sad, For in all the progress of the work, And daily laying of stone on stone, And constant lifting Of beams to dizzy heights, Not one drop of blood had sealed the work, Not one expiring soul had left its legacy Of immortality to the builder's skill. And to every master builder it was known, That no spire or tower or monument ever built Could last without the seal of blood.
