On June 21 a symposium was sponsored by the Bureau of Naval Weapons on the application of ultrasonic energy in the deformation of metals. At this session, a number of investigators actively working in the field reported informally on the results of their research. The reports revealed that the results achieved by incorporating ultrasonic transducers into conventional metalforming and-cutting operations are sufficiently promising that the technique merits further attention. Data are available to indicate that application of ultrasonic vibrations during metal working can increase speeds, lower forces, and improve surface finishes. All of these results have been obtained without any observed difference in properties between ultrasonically and conventionally fabricated parts. (Author).

Significant reductions in drawing force were obtained with all of the materials at the drawing rates noted. Surface finish was improved; cold drawing of the titanium alloy was practical with, but not without the application of vibratory energy. With the view to differentiating the effect of vibratory energy on die friction and on redundant deformation, high intensity ultrasonic vibration was applied during the steady-state drawing of copper and steel wire under varying conditions of area reduction, back-pull, drawing rate and ultrasonic power. It was not possible to differentiate between the ultrasonic effect on redundant deformation and the ultrasonic effect on die friction, but at the higher energy density the primary mechanism of the ultrasonic effect relates to friction reduction at the die-wire interface.

A technique was developed for studying effect of ultrasonic vibration on coefficient of friction between the rigid steel die and plastically deformed metal during strip drawing operation. It was observed that the stresses are substantially reduced when ultrasonic energy is introduced during the strip drawing process. Reduction in the coefficient of friction was also obtained with an application of ultrasound. The reduction in drawing stress is explained by superposition of the oscillatory stresses on the drawing stress. (Author).
