Mark McNeilly has extracted from Sun Tzu's The Art of War the six concepts most applicable to modern warfare, making them easy to understand and apply to military situations. Drawing on a wealth of fascinating historical examples, McNeilly shows how these six principles might be used in modern wars and how they can provide insight into current affairs, such as the war on terrorism and China's increasingly important strategic and military role in the world. This updated edition reflects on all that has happened in the past ten years, including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the challenge of Iran, the "Arab Spring", and the continued rise of China.

The global spread of science and technology expertise and the growing commercial access to advanced technologies with possible military application are creating potentially serious threats to the technological superiority underpinning U.S. military strength. Key to dealing with this situation is the ability of the U.S. intelligence community to be able to provide adequate and effective warning of evolving, critical technologies. To assist in performing this task, the Technology Warning Division of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) asked the National Research Council (NRC) to undertake a study examining technology warning issues. This report provides the first part of that study. It presents an assessment of critical, evolving technologies; postulates ways potential adversaries could disrupt these technologies; and provides indicators for the intelligence community to determine if such methods are under development. The intention of this report is to establish the foundation for a long-term relationship with the technology warning community to support the examination of technology warning issues.

`In peace prepare for war, in war prepare for peace.? `Appear weak when you are strong, and strong when you are weak.? `The supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting.? Written 2,500 years ago by the Chinese general Sun Tzu, The Art of War is revered today as the world?s most important commentary on war and peace. A poetic and potent treatise on military strategy, it has established its significance as an invaluable guide to using skill, cunning, tactics and discipline to outwit the opponent ? in diplomacy, public administration and corporate leadership. This edition ? containing an illuminating foreword by bestselling author Dr Radhakrishnan Pillai that contrasts Sun Tzu?s text with Chanakya?s Arthashastra ? is a must-read for all those who want to gain a deeper understanding of strategic decision-making.

The crisis is upon us: We have no viable doctrine for tomorrow's wars. Now that the world has entered the information age, principles that have served to enlighten the art of war no longer work. Born of agrarian times and honed during the industrial age, the classical principles of war are, in large part, hopelessly outdated. Radical change is needed now. The Principles of War for the Information Age provides a prescription for this change.
