In the beginning, there was Hawkwind. Not quite in the very beginning, of course; sundry creation myths notwithstanding, nothing springs from absolutely nothing. In terms of Space Rock though, while, without Hawkwind, there would still have been Space and Rock and, maybe, some people would have put them together and said "ah, this must be what we mean," Hawkwind was never simply "put together." Neither, though adherents of what we today call Space Rock can argue all night about its ingredients, can they be removed from the equation. What, after all, is Space Rock? To the earliest Hawkwind fans, who saw the adverts in the music press that advertised their first, eponymous, album beneath - yes, beneath the banner SPACE ROCK, it encompassed everything from the blues-driven throb of "Hurry On Sundown," to the spectral echoes of "Paranoia" (parts one and two, divisible only when you got up to change the record; on CD the break's just an irritant), and on to the full-blooded freak-out of "Seeing It As You Really Are," ten minutes of eerie electronics - except the sounds are all organic, and what you hear whispering, howling and hooting in your head is not necessarily what you have going on in your ears. Space Rock embraced all these things; Space Rock thus became all these things, and it was only later, once other musicians had borrowed its elements, isolated them and developed them as single strands, that maybe the basics became a little blurred. Plus... Daevid Allen, Syd Barrett, Tim Blake, the Edgar Broughton Band, Arthur Brown, Can, Robert Calvert, Chrome, the Deviants, Mick Farren, Faust, Edgar Froese, Gong, Jimi Hendrix, Steve Hillage, Kraftwerk, Legendary Pink Dots, Man, Michael Moorcock, Pink Fairies, Popol Vuh, Pressurehed, Quiet Sun, Ramases, Klaus Schulze, Sky Cries Mary, Sphynx, Tangerine Dream, Steve Took, Nik Turner, Twink AND MORE!

In the beginning, there was Space Rock. Not quite in the very beginning, of course; sundry creation myths notwithstanding, nothing springs from absolutely nothing. But Space Rock has been with us 50 years, and it will surely be with us for at least 50 more. To the first Floyd fans, it is ""Astronomy Domine""; to mid-period Gong fans, it is the Flying Teapot trilogy. To the festival faithful, it is ""Uncle Harry's Last Freakout'; to the Hawkwind fans who still flock to see them, it was and is it all. Space Rock embraces all these things; Space Rock thus became all these things. And if the basics are blurred, ask Daevid Allen, Syd Barrett, Tim Blake, Edgar Broughton, Arthur Brown, Can, Robert Calvert, Chrome, the Deviants, Mick Farren, Faust, Edgar Froese, Gong, Jimi Hendrix, Steve Hillage, Kraftwerk, Legendary Pink Dots, Man, Michael Moorcock, Pink Fairies, Popol Vuh, Pressurehed, Quiet Sun, Ramases, Klaus Schulze, Sky Cries Mary, Sphynx, Tangerine Dream, Steve Took, Nik Turner, Twink AND MORE!

Always riveting, Space Is the Place is the definitive biography of "one of the great big-band leaders, pianists, and surrealists of jazz" (The New York Times)—unparalleled for his purposeful outlandishness, a man who exerted a powerful influence over a vast array of artists. Sun Ra—a/k/a Herman Poole "Sonny Blount—was born in Alabama on May 22, 1914. But like Father Divine and Elijah Muhammad, he made a lifelong effort to obscure many of the facts of his early life. After years as a rehearsal pianist for nightclub revues and in blues and swing bands, including Wynonie Harris's and Fletcher Henderson's, Sun Ra set out in the 1950s to find a way to impart his views about the galaxy, black people, and spiritual matters through the various incarnations of the Intergalactic Arkestra. His repertoire ranging from boogie-woogie, swing, and bebop to free form, fusion, and whatever, Sun Ra was above all a paragon of contradictions: profundity and vaudeville; technical pianistic virtuosity and irony; assiduous attention to arrangements and encouragement of collective improvisation; respect for tradition and celebration of the fresh. Some might have been bemused by his Afro-Platonic neo-hermeticism; others might have laughed at his egregious excesses. But Sun Ra was at once one of the great avant-gardists of the latter half of the twentieth century and a black cultural nationalist who extended Afrocentrism from ancient Egypt to the heavens.
