A Torah scroll is mainly used in the ritual of Torah reading during Jewish prayers. At other times, it is stored in the holiest spot within a synagogue, the Torah ark, which is usually an ornate curtained-off cabinet or section of the synagogue built along the wall that most closely faces Jerusalem, the direction Jews face when praying. Readinh this book, you will know that this singular work stems from a double mystery which led the author to conduct a two-pronged investigation -- first was a fervent quest into the past of the miniature Sefer Torah discovered in his family in 2011 and into their history. And second, a systematic investigation into the realm of miniature sacred scrolls to illuminate the geographical and historical origin of his own. The author met with many eminent figures in the small world of experts in Sifreh Torah, scholars and rabbis from different Jewish religious traditions, and university professors. He examined relevant documents in libraries and archives in several countries and corresponded with historians specialized in the field. His goal was to uncover the past of the miniature Sefer Torah, which is unsigned and undated. The challenge here was to resolve a mystery and, in doing so, the author has given us a glimpse of the life and genealogy of a 20th century European Jewish family, while shedding light on the sacred book so central to Judaism as a whole.

Whether you are studying the Bible for the first time or you're simply curious about its history and contents, you will find everything you need in this "accessible, well-written handbook to Jewish belief as set forth in the Torah" (The Jerusalem Post). George Robinson, author of the acclaimed Essential Judaism, begins by recounting the various theories of the origins of the Torah and goes on to explain its importance as the core element in Jewish belief and practice. He discusses the basics of Jewish theology and Jewish history as they are derived from the Torah, and he outlines how the Dead Sea Scrolls and other archaeological discoveries have enhanced our understanding of the Bible. He introduces us to the vast literature of biblical commentary, chronicles the evolution of the Torah’s place in the synagogue service, offers an illuminating discussion of women and the Bible, and provides a study guide as a companion for individual or group Bible study. In the book’s centerpiece, Robinson summarizes all fifty-four portions that make up the Torah and gives us a brilliant distillation of two thousand years of biblical commentaries—from the rabbis of the Mishnah and the Talmud to medieval commentators such as Rashi, Maimonides, and ibn Ezra to contemporary scholars such as Nahum Sarna, Nechama Leibowitz, Robert Alter, and Everett Fox. This extraordinary volume—which includes a listing of the Torah reading cycles, a Bible time line, glossaries of terms and biblical commentators, and a bibliography—will stand as the essential sourcebook on the Torah for years to come.

Discovering Torah Wonders - Sefer VaHair EineinuUnlocking the Hidden Wonders of the TorahDisclaimer: Good knowledge of the Hebrew language and background Torah education is required to fully understand this book. The Bible Code, or the Torah Code, is a hidden code of Equidistant Letter Skips from within the over 3,300 year old Hebrew Bible that forms meaningful words and phrases that demonstrate foreknowledge and prophecy.Meeting Dr Eliyahu Rips noted Russian Mathematician and Torah Codes expert changed my life. Together with a team of leading scholars including famous mathematicians, among them (Rabbi Doron Witztum, Harold Gans Senior Cryptologic Mathematician for U.S. DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE, RETIRED, and PRESENTLY INDEPENDENT MATHEMATICAL CONSULTANT, Russian Mathematician Dr Alex Rotenberg, and many others) he shows that the ancient tradition of the greatest of Rabbis that everything is encoded in the Torah is real. Dr Rips spent countless hours showing me astonishing Torah wonders on his computer together with his neat color printouts and he has over 25 years of research that have not yet been published. There is strong - even overwhelming - evidence that Torah Codes are real. This color book show a few examples from my personal notes, and serves as an introduction to the Torah's endless wonders yet there are hundreds of more examples that have still not been published. Please use this book to learn that there is most definitely an intentionally encoded message in the Bible, yet understand that we cannot always decipher every message correctly, and we certainly cannot use the Code to predict future events or to try to promote any specific religion or ideology other than to say that the Torah was clearly written by God.This book contains the Holy Name of G-d so please treat it with respect. For those who do not understand or appreciate the mathematics of the Bible Code, i recommend reading: Marvels of our Blessed G-d's Torah: An Abridgement of Rav Tzvi Hirsch Schlez's Magnum Opus by Rav Yitzchak M Goodman. Even better would be to read the Hebrew original of Rav Tzvi Hirsch Schlez's Magnum Opus called Niflaos MiToras Hashem. For those seeking to understand the harmony of Torah and Science, read Mysteries of the Creation by Rabbi Dovid Brown, an extremely Valuable book. And for those who like to see the great patterns in the bible read Patterns in Genesis and Beyond by Rabbi David Sykes

Winner of the 2014 Sami Rohr Prize for Jewish Literature A thousand years ago, the most perfect copy of the Hebrew Bible was written. It was kept safe through one upheaval after another in the Middle East, and by the 1940s it was housed in a dark grotto in Aleppo, Syria, and had become known around the world as the Aleppo Codex. Journalist Matti Friedman’s true-life detective story traces how this precious manuscript was smuggled from its hiding place in Syria into the newly founded state of Israel and how and why many of its most sacred and valuable pages went missing. It’s a tale that involves grizzled secret agents, pious clergymen, shrewd antiquities collectors, and highly placed national figures who, as it turns out, would do anything to get their hands on an ancient, decaying book. What it reveals are uncomfortable truths about greed, state cover-ups, and the fascinating role of historical treasures in creating a national identity.

In an exciting inquiry akin to a detective story, the author set out to discover the unknown origin of a Sefer Torah, the most sacred jewish work. How could the Moïsi family have been unaware of the existence of such a rare item in its midst? Why had Francis' parents, and especially his father, never spoken of it? How had the scroll, dedicated to his paternal grandfather, come into the possession of the Moïsi family in the first place? This singular work stems from a double mystery which led Francis Moïsi to conduct a two-pronged investigation -- first was a fervent quest into the past of the miniature Sefer Torah discovered in his family in 2011 and into their history. And second, a systematic investigation into the realm of miniature sacred scrolls to illuminate the geographical and historical origin of his own.The author met with many eminent figures in the small world of experts in Sifreh Torah, scholars and rabbis from different Jewish religious traditions, and university professors. He was trained as a Civil Engineer at the Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées in France and at the University of California at Berkeley. Francis Moïsi is a fourth-generation Parisian, born into a French Jewish family of Romanian and Lithuanian origin. He was raised in an observant Jewish household and has been a long-time member of the MJLF, a Reform congregation in Paris, where he is now a member of the Executive Board and a Vice President. This book was first published in Paris in November 2016.
