Robert Nancy Y Mcdowell Bells Family History

The author traces the ancestors and descendants of Robert Bell (June 29, 1795 to July 19, 1848), born in Welch Tract, Marlboro County, South Carolina, to William and Ann Montgomery Bell, and his wife Nancy Y. McDowell Bell (February 3, 1808 to February 3, 1846), born to John and Jean/Jeanne Yongue McDowell, possibly in Fairfield County, South Carolina. They married in 1829 and had seven children. They lived primarily in Starkville, Oktibbeha County, Mississippi. Includes pedigree charts and a family group sheet.

Driven by property interests, they enacted mining codes, held criminal trials, and decided claim disputes. Collectively, what is presented here is a veritable history of a people--a "tribe" of people--who settled in the valley between the Yadkin and Catawba rivers more than two hundred years ago. The object of the book is to show where these people originated and what became of them and their descendants. This book collects some of McDowell’s most influential papers of the last two decades. The essays deal with themes such as the interpretation of Aristotle’s and Plato’s ethical writings, questions in moral philosophy that arise out of the Greek tradition, Wittengensteinian ideas about reason in action, and issues central to philosophy of mind.
