TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 544: Environmentally Sensitive Channel- and Bank-Protection Measures examines environmentally sensitive channel- and bank-protection measures and includes recommended design guidelines for their application and a selection system for helping to determine the most appropriate channel- and bank-protection measure. The selection system is presented as an interactive software program entitled "Greenbank," which can be found on the accompanying CD-ROM (CRP-CD-58). The selection system software (CRP-CD-58) is available for download in an ZIP format.

This Low-Volume Roads Engineering Best Management Practices Field Guide is intended to provide an overview of the key planning, location, design, construction, and maintenance aspects of roads that can cause adverse environmental impacts and to list key ways to prevent those impacts. Best Management Practices are general techniques or design practices that, when applied and adapted to fit site-specific conditions, will prevent or reduce pollution and maintain water quality. BMPs for roads have been developed by many agencies since roads often have a major adverse impact on water quality, and most of those impacts are preventable with good engineering and management practices. Roads that are not well planned or located, not properly designed or constructed, not well maintained, or not made with durable materials often have negative effects on water quality and the environment.

This document is a cooperative effort among fifteen Federal agencies and partners to produce a common reference on stream corridor restoration. It responds to a growing national and international interest in restoring stream corridors.

The Clean Water Act (CWA) requires that wetlands be protected from degradation because of their important ecological functions including maintenance of high water quality and provision of fish and wildlife habitat. However, this protection generally does not encompass riparian areasâ€"the lands bordering rivers and lakesâ€"even though they often provide the same functions as wetlands. Growing recognition of the similarities in wetland and riparian area functioning and the differences in their legal protection led the NRC in 1999 to undertake a study of riparian areas, which has culminated in Riparian Areas: Functioning and Strategies for Management. The report is intended to heighten awareness of riparian areas commensurate with their ecological and societal values. The primary conclusion is that, because riparian areas perform a disproportionate number of biological and physical functions on a unit area basis, restoration of riparian functions along America's waterbodies should be a national goal.

TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 568: Riprap Design Criteria, Recommended Specifications, and Quality Control examines design guidelines; recommended material specifications and test methods; recommended construction specifications; and construction, inspection, and quality control guidelines for riprap for a range of applications, including revetment on streams and riverbanks, bridge piers and abutments, and bridge scour countermeasures such as guide banks and spurs.
