Objectives: Endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) is performed for patients with chronic rhiosinusitis (CRS) that have failed maximal medical therapy. This study seeks to determine the prevalence of revision surgery and factors predicting the need for revision after ESS using a large statewide surgery database. Study design: Large retrospective cohort study using the State Ambulatory Surgery Database for the state of CA between 2005-2011. Methods: We identified over 61,000 patients with CRS who underwent ESS, determined by CPT code. We identified which patients underwent a repeat surgery, and performed multivariate modeling to determine which factors (nasal polyps, age, gender, insurance, hospital setting, ethnicity) predicted the need for revision. Adjusted odds ratios (AOR) and 95% confidence intervals are presented. Results: Of 61,339 patients who underwent ESS, 4,078 (6.65%) returned for revision ESS during the time period investigated. In a multivariate logistic regression model, positive predictors of revision were a diagnosis of nasal polyps (AOR 1.20, 95% CI 1.11-1.29, p

INTRODUCTION Endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) improves quality of life but previous studies show high recurrence rates. We aim to assess long-term outcomes of tailored ESS. METHODOLOGY Patients undergoing ESS in 2010-2 at a tertiary centre were sent questionnaires at 5 years including SNOT-22, asthma control and medication use. Of 226 patients, 135 (59.7%) responded. This is the only book dedicated solely to frontal sinus disorders. It is a richly illustrated and comprehensive mine of information on the anatomy and management of these disorders. This updated second edition offers much new information. Additional topics include balloon dilation, frontal surgery as part of skull base surgery, and advances in endoscopic techniques and tools that have occurred since 2004 and have made open osteoplastic procedures almost obsolete. The anatomy and surgery of the supraorbital ethmoid cell and its significance in the pathology of frontal sinus disease are also covered. Throughout the book, particularly important areas of text are highlighted and core messages, emphasized. Videos of described procedures are available online.

Using illustrative clinical cases, this volume in the Problem-Based Learning series reviews key topics in Anesthesia frequently encountered in clinical practice and on examinations. It highlights practical issues that arise in the operating room and solutions for them. With real-world clinical cases and discussion questions that guide case progression, this book facilitates both individual and small-group learning. Each case is further broken down to include additional related subtopics for maximum yield. Evidence-based reviews and multiple-choice self-assessment questions follow each case, making this book ideal for continuing education in anesthesia for the generalist and specialist practitioner. Incidence of invasive fungal sinusitis has been increasing over the years. The understanding of its pathophysiology has improved with newer serological tests and diagnostic methods helping in earlier diagnosis and reducing patient morbidity. It was believed earlier that invasive fungal sinusitis is seen only in immune compromised patients but clinical reports suggest otherwise. More anti-fungal drugs are being added to improve incidence of patient survival. This book aims to compile all practical information about invasive fungal sinusitis into a single volume. Therefore, busy clinicians would not have to perform exhaustive literature studies to diagnose invasive fungal sinusitis. The book aims to provide an overview of diseases which could be mistaken for invasive fungal sinusitis and discuss how the management is different. Book sections consist of clinical, microbiological, serological, pathological, radiological and pharmacological features of the disease and its management. Each section is important in today’s context as it dynamically alters the management of the patient. Early clinical suspicion and rapid microbiological, pathological and radiological diagnosis with aggressive treatment with surgical debridement and medical therapy leads to favorable outcomes.

Intraoperative imaging technologies have taken an ever-increasing role in the daily practice of neurosurgeons and the increasing attention and interest necessitated international interaction and collaboration. The Intraoperative Imaging Society was formed in 2007. This book brings together highlights from the second meeting of the Intraoperative Imaging Society, which took place in Istanbul-Turkey from June 14 to 17, 2009. Included within the contents of the book is an overview of the emergence and development of the intraoperative imaging technology as well as a glimpse on where the technology is heading. This is followed by in detail coverage of intraoperative MRI technology and sections on intraoperative CT and ultrasonography. There are also sections on multimodality integration, intraoperative robotics and other intraoperative technologies. We believe that this book will provide an up-to date and comprehensive general overview of the current intraoperative imaging technology as well as detailed discussions on individual techniques and clinical results.
