A British Royal Air Force pilot recounts fighting over African deserts and Asian jungles during World War II in this military memoir. Merton Naydler joined the RAF at the age of nineteen and served for the next six years until May 1946. He flew Spitfires and Hurricanes during a tour of duty that took him to North Africa, Burma, and Malaya. This well written and extremely entertaining memoir portrays wartime life in the desert environment where sand, flies, life under canvas made living and flying a daunting experience. This is two books in one. The first, written by Monty Bush Cotton, gives details of his early years before reaching the UK and flying Hurricanes with 43 Fighter Squadron in 1941. There is then a more comprehensive account of the years Cotton spent in the Burma-India theatre, again on Hurricanes with, and eventually commanding, 17 Squadron.

Bill wore his heart, not just his sergeant’s stripes, on his sleeve. His story is a compelling, dignified account of an average man’s war from 1942 into 1944 in the UK, the Mediterranean, Africa, and onwards through his first operational tour based in India. Matt Poole, an expert on 159 Squadron and RAF Liberator activities against the Japanese, seamlessly enhances Bill’s narrative with added historical detail. Although Bill passed away in 1994, Matt vowed, in retirement, to help bring the memoir to a wider audience.

Squadron Leader Mahinder S Pujji, DFC, is one of the most experienced Second World War veteran fighter pilots. As a young man in India he answered the call to arms, and he was among the first twenty-four Indian pilots to arrive in England to join the RAF. Before long he was in the front line, fighting in the battle for Britain's survival, voluntarily risking his life for a country not his own. Whether on the home front, in the Western Desert, on the Indian Frontier or in Burma, Pujji gained a reputation as much for his qualities of determination and modesty as for his consummate flying skills.
