Excerpt from Quarterly Journal of Forestry, Vol. 1 The Heathen - Although readers of a forestry journal usually know more about the weather than they wish, it is such a characteristic British institution that it would be unpatriotic not to mention it. So far as the North of England is concerned, the summer of 1906 has probably been one of the best for years. Sufficient heat and sufficient moisture, following a cold but not seriously frosty Spring, have produced a growth on all forest trees which we should imagine to be above the average; while newly planted trees which failed to grow had to excuse themselves on other ground than a dry season. In the South, more frosty and droughty conditions prevailed, and for once in a way this part of the country has been less favored than the North. However, it is probably safe to say that while better seasons may have been seen, there have also been a great many worse, and taking things all round, the forester has no serious cause for complaint against the weather of 1906. Excerpt from Forestry Quarterly, Vol. 2 The first volume of the Forestry Quarterly was published under the auspices of the New York State College of Forestry by a board of managers and advisers formed of students, alumni and faculty members of that institution. With its second volume, owing to the closing of the college, the Quarterly enters upon an independent career, being published privately under the direction of a board of editors representing the profession at large and coming from the various centers of professional forestry work. This wider representation in the editorship of the Quarterly will, it is hoped, establish confidence in the authoritative and representative character of the publication, give it greater professional interest, and increase its usefulness in the direction in which the main ambition of the publishers lies, namely, to make it the organ for inter-communication on technical and professional subjects among the rising generation of foresters. With this aim foremost, the editors invite all those in the profession to contribute towards the success of this first professional journal by contributing to its pages and by adding its volumes to their libraries. Besides original articles, of which the publication of at least twelve is expected during the year, special attention will be given to reviews of foreign and home forestry literature. With regard to the foreign literature it is intended to so brief the more important papers as to make reference to the originals as much as possible unnecessary. It is expected to make the journal of interest not only to professional foresters but to all who are actively interested in the management of timber lands, especially lumbermen and those charged with the forestry interests of the various states. Excerpt from Journal of Forestry, 1919, Vol. 17: Official Organ of the Society of American Foresters, Combining the Proceedings of the Society and the Forestry Quarterly During the past five years there has been a cumulative realization of the fact that the low scale of salaries paid by the Forest Service was causing a shortage of competent men on the National Forests.' The cost of living has so far outstripped the almost negligible promotions allowed by Congress that there has been an increasing annual exodus of leadership, experience, and ability - technical and non-technical into other fields. This fact is so well known as to require no further proof or mention. The purpose of this paper is to point out two facts which I believe have so far been realized only dimly, if at all, by the profession: First, that the salary situation threatens the ultimate success of our great experiment in national forestry; second, that really logical methods of redress have not yet been attempted. Excerpt from Journal of Forestry, 1921, Vol. 19: Official Organ of the Society of American Foresters The above-comparison with Connecticut plots suggests the possible applicability of the table to even-aged, well-stocked, stands of southern upland hardwoods over a wide range of territory, possibly from north ern Alabama to New England and westward to the Mississippi River. This, however, is a matter for determination and one which can be accomplished for each particular locality by taking a comparatively few plots representing the range of sites present.
