The theory of solitons involves a broad variety of mathematical methods and appears in many areas of physics, technology, biology, and pure and applied mathematics. In this book, emphasis is placed on both theory (considering mathematical approaches for classical and quantum nonlinear systems ? both continuous and discrete) and experiment (with special discussions on high bit rate optical communications and pulse dynamics in optical materials).

This book discusses achievements in the last 20 years, recent developments and future perspectives in nonlinear science. Both continuous and discrete systems ? classical and quantum ? are considered.

This book is an edited version of lectures given by the authors at a seminar at the Rand Afrikaans University. It gives a survey on the Painlev‚ test, Painlev‚ property and integrability. Both ordinary differential equations and partial differential equations are considered.

NEEDs '92 was held in Dubna, Russia in July 1992. This set of proceedings compiles the lectures and short contributions on the soliton theory and its applications presented during the conference. The topics covered included the most recent results on relevant problems of nonlinear evolution systems such as: Multidimensional Integrable Systems, Geometric and Algebraic Methods, Painleve Property, Lie-Backlund Symmetries, Spectral Methods, Solitons and Coherent Structures, Computational Methods, Quantum Field and String Theories, Nonlinear Optics and Hydrodynamics, Condensed Matter etc. The extent of coverage for these important topics makes this book useful, informative and insighful for the mathematics and theoretical physics community, both the senior researches and those just entering the field.

From its origins nearly two centuries ago, Hamiltonian dynamics has grown to embrace the physics of nearly all systems that evolve without dissipation, as well as a number of branches of mathematics, some of which were literally created along the way. This volume contains the proceedings of the International Conference on Hamiltonian Dynamical Systems; its contents reflect the wide scope and increasing influence of Hamiltonian methods, with contributions from a whole spectrum of researchers in mathematics and physics from more than half a dozen countries, as well as several researchers in the history of science. With the inclusion of several historical articles, this volume is not only a slice of state-of-the-art methodology in Hamiltonian dynamics, but also a slice of the bigger picture in which that methodology is imbedded.
