Office Of The Dean Of The Faculty And Provost Records

The records of the Office of the Dean of the Faculty and Provost consist of announcements; memos; and reports (1928-1981). They provide information on a variety of matters, including academic advising; course enrollment statistics; examination regulations; tuition increases; scholarships; graduate students; Five College Information; Search Committee results; information about the responsibilities of the Academic Dean, the Dean of the Faculty and the amalgamation of the latter with the Provost. There are also annual reports from this office, covering the years 1927 to 1941, 1952 to 1973 and 1980-81. These primarily discuss academic changes and developments for the year of the report. Included are faculty evaluations and the records of departed faculty.

The correspondence primarily documents interaction between the Dean and other OSU offices and pertains to the organization of conferences, OSU research centers and institutes, and cooperation between OSU and regional community colleges. The committee records consist of correspondence and reports generated by university committees and address the topics of higher education for older women, new student programs, and the distribution and review of statements on student rights. The reports pertain to continuing education in Oregon and faculty instruction at OSU. The legal case file pertains to Economics Department faculty member Jeanne Dost and her complaint and legal action against the university. Series I in the microfilmed records pertains to the Mosser Plan for Awarding Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching and includes correspondence, articles and newspaper clippings, publications, and reports. The General Files include correspondence, grant proposals, meeting minutes, memoranda, newspaper clippings, and reports. Among the topics addressed in these records include the development of new academic programs and curricula, instructional use of television in the classroom, pesticide research, student employment, and the Peace Corps program.

While the Vice President and Provost were usually not directly responsible for student life issues, many of the records reflect on issues that affect student life, such as 1968 crisis and its aftermath, academic planning, admissions, course offerings, discipline, financial aid, housing, safety, services, space, tuition, and unionization of graduate students.

Contains mostly incoming correspondence from prospective students, and Harvard College and Corporation officials among others. Also includes reports from committees on faculty, examinations, professorships, library, admission requirements, etc.; financial documents; faculty petitions; and lists of students. Subject files contain applications from prospective students, letters of recommendation, and material about admission of women and blacks.

This collection contains the records of the Provosts of the University as well as files kept by the Office of the Provost that pre-date its existence.
