"Sheer spooky fun." ―Kirkus Reviews Two best friends. One goes missing. And a paranormal podcast that hopes to reunite them, but not before unleashing horror in many forms. When Zeus’s best friend gets trapped inside the House of Mystery and Mirrors at Carnival Nocturne, Tobin’s existence is erased from the world, and Zeus is the only person who remembers that his best friend ever lived. Zeus is determined to return to the carnival and rescue his friend—that is, if he can only find it. Together with Tobin’s sister, Jana, Zeus concocts a plan to conjure Tobin’s captors on Halloween night via his paranormal podcast, Odd Occurrences. Listeners are invited to call in and share their supernatural experiences with the audience. From ghostly encounters to haunted dolls, terrifying escape rooms with deadly consequences to alien lake creatures, Zeus hopes that someone’s story will produce a clue that leads him to the mysterious carnival—and ultimately, back to Tobin. But little does Zeus know that Tobin is almost out of time.

Get an education in ghostly history—and meet the spirits that haunt schools in Boston and beyond. Includes photos! Among the throngs of students attending colleges and universities across the state of Massachusetts linger the apparitions of those who met their untimely ends on campus grounds. In 1953, Eugene O’Neill, an Irish American playwright, died in room 401 of the Sheraton Hotel—today a Boston University dormitory. Named Writer’s Corridor in O’Neill’s honor, the fourth floor draws students in search of creative inspiration and a sighting of the ghostly writer. A grief-stricken widow roams the halls of Winthrop Hall at Endicott College in her pink wedding gown. She threw herself from her widow’s walk after receiving news of her husband's death at sea, and is known to students today as the “pink lady.” Author Renee Mallett reveals the stories behind these “school spirits”—and offers eerie stories from over two dozen colleges and universities throughout the Bay State.

Pope Francis has captured the hearts of people the word-over with his gentle voice, friendly smile and humble manner. But there was another pope in 1978 who did the same, Albino Luciani, Pope John Paul I. Luciani served as pontiff for only 33 days in 1978, but he filled the world with hope in those few days and this novel takes the reader into the conclave that elected him and through the Vatican politics that he had to deal with while trying to renew the spirit of the Catholic church. Filled with quotes from the Pope's actual speeches and based on extensive research into the workings of the 1978 Vatican, this novel gives the reader an inside look at one of the world's oldest institutions and a portrait of a fascinating human being.

Youre about to enter a city that has no equal. It was built by extraordinary people with imaginative minds. Did they drink? Not sure, but why else would they build it in a Nevada desert? Some say you can go anywhere in the world and discover that people not only know about Las Vegas--theyd give anything to get there. True. As soon as I graduated from college I took an all-night bus to reach a city Id heard of, but never seen. I stayed 30 years. Damn good years, too. And the mystique of the entertainers and the film stars and the elaborate restaurants and 24-hour-a-day casinos never wore off. I spent 20 of my years at the Sahara, on the Strip, got inside the gambling business in the 60s and loved it. Helped it, too, with my writing and my inventions. The Mob was still around in those days. They were the first venture capitalists and owned a piece of every casino in town. Did that stop anyone from having a good time? Of course not. Gradually the Mob faded away--which is what happens when an FBI office with 15 agents sets up shop in town. But the gaiety didnt stop for a second, even when corporations realized they were the big guys now. Our Sahara entertainment director stunned us in 1964 when he made a deal with The Beatles to play two shows. I met the boys after dark at a small Las Vegas airport, rode with them to the Sahara and helped get them to their suite before teen age girls tore their clothes off. So take a chance, have a seat and enjoy that drink in front of you. Its time to start the show. --John Romero

Our world is a far wilder, weirder and more mysterious place than we ever admit, yet the magic we perform every day hides beneath the countless explanations we foist onto life. In the face of these convincing yet empty explanations, we displace our hunger for a sense of the magical onto other goals, addictions, and distractions. Left at odds with the very sublimity that animates our every moment, we have turned magic into an exception, a collection of superstitions, a historical backwater, and a cinematic spectacle, rather than the very fabric of life as lived. This book is about recovering the imagination of magic and the magic of imagination. This, the first of two volumes, introduces the landscape of the imaginal and the existential voids. Through illustrative stories and self-assessment exercises, this book brings the often-obscure language of existentialism, esotericism, and imaginal psychology to life.
