Excerpt from New Mexico Historical Review, Vol. 23 The isolation of New Mexico which was such an Obstacle to development was also a hindrance to the missionaries in matters Of ecclesiastical administration. They were under the jurisdiction Of the bishop Of Zacatecas. In 1634 favor able action was taken both in Rome and Spain for the crea tion Of a bishopric at Santa Fe. Unfortunately, the crown decided to consult the Viceroy and the archbishop at Mexico City before reaching a final decision, and nothing was ever heard of the matter again.12 It was only after New Mexico became a part Of the United States that the bishopric Of Santa Fe was established, with Father Lamy as its first bishop. Excerpt from New Mexico Historical Review, 1946, Vol. 21 For approximately a century the Navaho have been struggling for possession of their traditional homeland against the intruding white man. Their biggest victory came when they were allowed to'return to northwestern New Mexico and adjacent Arizona in 1868 from their im prisonment near Fort Sumner, in the Pecos valley. A minor, but important triumph, was won in the 1880's when they regained ownership of a strip of land on the south side of the San Juan river near Farmington and Bloomfield.
