They were under the jurisdiction Of the bishop Of Zacatecas. In 1634 favor able action was taken both in Rome and Spain for the crea tion Of a bishopric at Santa Fe. Unfortunately, the crown decided to consult the Viceroy and the archbishop at Mexico City before reaching a final decision, and nothing was ever heard of the matter again.12 It was only after New Mexico became a part Of the United States that the bishopric Of Santa Fe was established, with Father Lamy as its first bishop.
