Excerpt from Essays and Miscellanies The Indicator, a series of papers originally published in weekly numbers, having been long out of print, and repeated calls having been made for it among the booksellers, the author has here made a selection, comprising the greater portion of the articles, and omitting such only as he unwillingly put forth in the hurry of periodical publication, or as seemed otherwise unsuited for present publication, either by the nature of their disquisitions, or from containing commendatory criticisms now rendered superfluous by the reputation of the works criticised. The author has little further to say, by way of advertisement to these pages, except that both the works were written with the same view of inculcating a love of nature and imagination, and of furnishing a sample of the enjoyment which they afford; and he cannot give a better proof of that enjoyment, as far as he was capable of it, than by stating, that both were written during times of great trouble with him, and both helped him to see much of that fair play between his own anxieties and his natural cheerfulness, of which an indestructible belief in the good and the beautiful has rendered him perhaps not undeserving. Excerpt from Essays and Miscellanies, Vol. 2 of 2 Do you have in mind Lamb's Dream Chil dren 9 Well, if not, at the first opportunity take the volume from the library shelf or the um visited garret or wherever else you may be able to come across it, and after ridding it of the accumulated dust read the little story again. Then if you will not believe and know that his dream children were real children, as real as was his fair Alice, you may be sure we shall have made this journey together in vain. Excerpt from Popular Lectures on 'the Essays and Reviews': Delivered in Various Places, and Addressed to the Common People Certain divines have fastened on some things hard to be understood, and have turned them into positive and absolute absurdities. These divines are ministers of a Church whose Articles are pre-eminently Protestant - whose martyrs and reformers have been among the most illustrious. No impartial person can fail to recognize great piety in many of her Bishops, great learning in many of her presbyters. The Essays and Reviews do not contain Church of England doctrine. The book, however, has become not celebrated, for that belongs to excellence, but pre-eminently notorious. Unitarian ministers are reading it from their pulpits, and boasting that the Church of England is coming over to them. The Bishops of that Church have met to consider, and as a body have condemned it. They have unanimously denounced the book; it would seem also to be their duty to depose the writers of it. Excerpt from Miscellanies, Vol. 11 HE essays and lectures contained in the following pages were not included by Emerson himself in any volume of his works, but they must not, on that account be slighted. Indeed, many of them found a place in the last volumes of the posthumous collected edition, and have therefore some sort of official sanction. A few - for instance, The Senses and the Soul, the editorial preface to the Dial, and the essay on Saadi are now for the first time reprinted. The pieces vary considerably in quality, but they are far too good to be lost, and a handy collection like the present should be welcome to all admirers of the greater and better known works. Excerpt from Miscellanies The several papers are arranged substantially in the order of their first appearance. One only, heretofore printed among Thoreau's writ ings, is omitted, for Prayers as Mr. Edward W. Emerson shows,1 was written by Mr. R. W. Emerson, and published by him in The Dial. The verses included in it were alone by Thoreau. The earliest production of Thoreau which has found its way into print appears to be an essay. Excerpt from Miscellanies: Chiefly Addresses, Academical and Historical Requests from time to time have been made for a selec tion from my anonymous writings: in consequence, a volume was planned and arranged. But my Publisher, on learning how much material, hitherto unprinted, lay in my drawers, requested me to furnish it to him in preference. Nor is it all yet exhausted. On the reception given to this volume it must depend, Whether others shall follow. Although the Lectures have received recent correction, I have carefully avoided to alter any allusions Which indicate the year or place of original delivery. The last article appeared in the National Review, an unfortunately short -lived quarterly. The Lecture on Elocution was delivered at a Ladies' College.
