Excerpt from Market Supplies and Prices of Apples These tables were based on the car-lot unloads in these 41 cities rather than on the total supply, including trucked-in and other local receipts, because reliable information on local receipts was not available for all cities, whereas the car-lot receivers were able to furnish fairly complete records and estimates on the car-lot receipts. In most cities the car-lot sample on which the estimates were based included more than 70 per cent of the car unloads. Local receipts by motor truck often went direct to retail stores or to the consumers or were handled by small dealers and peddlers, and estimates on the quantity and varietal composition of this local supply were not as accurate as Similar information on car-lot receipts obtained from large dealers. The apple movement from important commercial States such as Washington, New York, Virginia, and Illinois is largely in car lots, and statistics on shipments and unloads are in car lots. An analysis of the car-lot supply of important markets showing the relative importance and source of varieties, supplemented by such information as is available on the local receipts, gives a good idea of the commercial apple supply. Excerpt from Apple Marketing: A Review of Economic Research, 1945-1960 Demand and supply analysis involves examination of past market experience to measure the effects of important factors which influence the price of a commodity and the amount produced and sold. In so far as these factors can be identified and their effects measured, and if market conditions do not differ Widely from the past, results from such studies can be used in predicting what might be expected under current or probable future market conditions. Demand and supply studies seek answers to a variety of questions, such as what is the price likely to be for a cr0p of a certain Size; what part of the apple cr0p Will be sold for the several processed uses and what part for fresh consumption; what is the relationship among prices of apples for these different uses; what is the expected price variation Within a season? This last type of information would be helpful to growers in deciding when to sell apples. Results from research studies made in recent years indicate that a number of factors affect prices and utilization of apples. Among these are the Size of the apple crop, the volume of competing fruits available, and consumer income after taxes (disposable income). These factors affect price and utilization of apples in different ways. For instance, when the apple cr0pis heavy, prices tend to fall in order to move the larger crop, as long as other factors do not change. Prices tend to be higher whencr0ps are small. Changes in supplies of competing fruits have a similar effect-the price tending to be lower when large quantities of such fruits are available than when small quantities are on the market. Usually prices are less affected by the availability of substitutes than by the supply of the commodity itself, but this has not always been true for apples. Excerpt from Trends and Current Characteristics in the United States Apple Market This is the first in a series of studies concerned with the structure of the market for fresh and processed apples in the United States. The problem is approached initially at the national industry level and subsequently broken down to the various regional aspects. The ultimate objective of this series of studies is to develop a model that will predict equilibrium regional prices and consumption rates for fresh apples in any given year, and to determine least-cost patterns of interregional flows. Additional objectives are concerned with predicting the impact of changes in consumer income levels, prices of competing products, annual apple production, and transportation costs upon regional prices, consumption rates and movements of fresh apples. Excerpt from Apple Market Investigations, 1914-15 With the opening of the European war it was not thought that the United Kingdom and the Continent would draw their usual supply Of American apples, and a severe decrease In export demand appeared to be so imminent that the Office of Markets and Rural Organization issued a warning to growers and shippers, advising them to be exceedingly cautious about Shipping apples to seaboard for export, unless steamer space and a certain demand on the other side were assured. The general trade forecasts gave the impression that the European markets were not to be counted on seriously as Offering an outlet for a large amount of apples. In the past the influence of English and continental markets upon conditions at home have been strong, although the quantity Of fruit shipped is not large as com pared with the market surplus, and when it appeared that the European outlet would be closed a serious depression ensued. Excerpt from Harvesting, Storing, and Packing Apples for the Fresh Market: Regional Practices and Costs There are five major apple production regions in the United States. In each region, production for the fresh market consists of different proportions of various varieties, grades, and sizes of apples. Harvesting, storing, and packing practices vary according to means of procurement, picking labor used, length of the storage season, type of storage, quantity of apples stored, type of containers packed, terms of sale, types of buyers, and the geographic markets served. The picture is further complicated by differing cost structures for harvesting, storing, packing, and transporting fresh apples to market. Since survival in the fresh apple industry depends on all these factors, each packer and shipper is vitally concerned with the relative efficiency of his operation and with the competitive position of his region. Apple growers are interested in factors that influence their returns be tween the time apples are harvested and the time they are sold. The concern of growers, packers, and shippers was especially evident during the three marketing seasons through which were characterized by high production levels and depressed prices for both fresh apples and apples for processing. The crop, which was the largest on record, exceeded 160 million bushels, including over 88 million bushels marketed for fresh consumption. Consumers are also interested in the costs involved in producing and mar keting apples through to the retail store. Consumers have frequently asked why apples cost more at the retail store than at the orchard. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
