Excerpt from Leaves for Quiet Hours Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. -ephesians v1. 13. What a strange conclusion to so martial a. War-cry! The soldier is generally told to put on his armour for the sake of the battle; here it is for the sake of the camp. To the com mon View the arduous thing in a Christian's life is the hour of conflict; to Paul it is the hour after conflict. If you or I had written this verse we should have put it thus: Take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand awaiting the foe, and finally to withstand when the foe has come. But Paul reverses the process. To him the withstanding is the less difficult of the two. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Life's Quiet Hours It seems to us, gentle reader, that a parallel might be drawn between the world around us and the inhabitants of this quiet village. The world is in a high state of feverish ex citement. Many are hurrying to and fro, and knowledge is increased. The great events which are crowding one upon another, each one of which is sufficiently important to form a distinct volume in future history, may well call forth the deepest energies of our race, and send out the most capable and stir ring spirits among us to mingle In the mighty fray, and from the tangled and complicated mass to draw forth the thread which shall guide the nations into peace. Excerpt from Songs for Quiet Hours On July 25, 1914, at Epworth Heights, Michigan, Myra Goodwin Plants entered into life immortal. After a heroic struggle for health, her frail body yielded, but her indomitable spirit lives. One cannot think of her as dead. She was too high and strong and good to die. She was born at Brookville, Indiana, July 22, 1856. Her father, Rev. Thomas A. Goodwin, D.D., was a very prominent minister, author, and reformer. She was educated in the Indianapolis high school and in Mount Vernon Seminary, Washington, D. C. She taught in De Pauw University, and later engaged in W. C. T. U. evangelistic work. On September 16, 1885, she was married to Dr. Samuel Plantz, now president of Lawrence College. She was a model pastor's wife, endearing herself to all by her sweetness and kindness. A great part of President Plantz's success in building up Lawrence College is due to his wife's efforts. How little can bare biographical facts tell of the life of a soul! Myra Plantz was a wonderful woman. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Between the Lights: Thoughts for the Quiet Hour Between the Lights is for the little pause in life at the close of the day, when the most con scientiously busy worker will steal a few moments of rest and refreshment before the lamps are lighted. In the compilation many favorite poems have, with reluctance, been omitted, on account of their length, while many have been retained whose sentiment is superior to their diction. A few quaint old things I have used as a kind of moral tonic. Some original things have been given me; and others are added because of tender associations.
