This book explores some of the key challenges confronting the governance of cities in Africa, the reforms implemented in the field of urban governance, and the innovative approaches in critical areas of local governance, namely in the broad field of decentralization and urban planning reform, citizen participation, and good governance. The collection also investigates the constraints that continuously hamper urban governments as well as the ability to improve urban governance in African cities through citizen responsive innovations. Decentralization based on the principle of subsidiarity emerges as a critical necessary reform if African cities are to be appropriately empowered to face the challenges created by the unprecedented urban growth rate experienced all over the continent. This requires, among other initiatives, the implementation of an effective local self-government system, the reform of planning laws, including the adoption of new planning models, the development of citizen participation in local affairs, and new approaches to urban informality. The book will be of interest to students, researchers and policy makers in urban studies, and in particular for those interested in urban planning in Africa.

This Open Access book is for scientists and experts who work on urban food policies. It provides a conceptual framework for understanding the urban food system sustainability and how it can be tackled by local governments. Written by a collective of researchers, this book describes the existing conceptual frameworks for an analysis of urban food policies, at the crossroads of the concepts of food system and sustainable city. It provides a basis for identifying research questions related to urban local government initiatives in the North and South. It is the result of work carried out within Agropolis International within the framework of the Sustainable Urban Food Systems program and an action research carried out in support of Montpellier Méditerranée Métropole for the construction of its agroecological and food policy.

Research on cities worldwide still takes its cue from cities in Europe and the US, which are seen as the standard model. However, cities in the global South are undergoing a much more rapid transformation, including multiple interlinked transitions, with Africa featuring the highest urbanization rates world-wide. Scholars therefore call for a new approach to urban studies which examines cities from a more global comparative perspective. This book discusses the new approach, which pays added attention to the role that societal creativity plays in processes of urbanization, instead of concentrating exclusively on expert-driven planning and intervention. Especially in fast-growing cities with weaker institutional capacity for interventions, the interplay between intervention and invention, between expert and societal agency, becomes more tangible and all the more significant. Depuis les années 1960, suite à la construction progressive de l'Union Européenne et, bien après, à l'émergence du phénomène de la mondialisation, les dimensions spatiales de développement sont devenues multiples. Aux anciens concepts comme le pays, la région, le territoire national... sont venus s'ajouter des espaces d'intégration régionale et de la mondialisation. De même, la démocratisation de l'Etat et de la société, amorcée dans la plupart des pays africains depuis 1990, a entraîné la promotion de tous petits espaces de commandement issus de la décentralisation. Désormais, les espaces de développement deviennent plus complexes. Faut-il aller de " l'Etat-nation aux Etats-régions " ou de la " Région aux territoires " ? Ce sont là autant de questions qui se posent actuellement à la géographie. Ce volume, Maîtrise de l'espace et développement en Afrique : état des lieux, a pour objectif de faire prendre conscience aux géographes africains des nouveaux enjeux et défis auxquels est désormais confrontée leur discipline. Que signifie désormais l'espace de développement ? Quelle est sa portée économique et politique ? Ces questions sont d'autant plus importantes à soulever qu'en Afrique, l'organisation de l'espace dépend de deux logiques : formelle et informelle.
