Jacob Of Sarugs Homilies On The Resurrection

This volume gives a bilingual Syriac-English edition of Saint Jacob of Sarug's homilies on the Great Sunday of the Resurrection and on the Resurrection itself. The Syriac text is fully vocalized, and the translation is annotated with a commentary and biblical references. The volume constitutes a fascicle of Gorgias's Complete Homilies of Saint Jacob of Sarug.

Jacob of Sarug's Homily on the Creation of Adam and the Resurrection of the Dead is a meditation on the fall of Adam and its consequences. Adam was created the pinnacle of God's creation, a "god of flesh" in whom was constituted all the rest of nature. Adam was set on the summit of Paradise, but due to his incalculably huge fall from that pinnacle, he and all creation became subject to corruption. The world and all that was in it will eventually die as did the body of Adam. God's mercy, however, through the incarnation, passion and death of His Son, will restore everything to a state even better than the original making it possible for Adam and the rest of creation to be reconstituted in a spiritual, incorruptible form that will exist eternally in the unending light of Christ.

In Mar Jacob of Sarug's (d. 521) homily on the Ascension of our Lord, Jacob brings his understanding of the saving action of Christ to fullest poetic expression. Jacob describes how the whole of creation, starting from the beginning of history, is redeemed by Christ's action as he reclaims his rightful place in the heavens. The volume constitutes a fascicle of The Metrical Homilies of Mar Jacob of Sarug, which, when complete, will contain the original Syriac text of Jacob's surviving sermons, fully vocalized, alongside an annotated English translation.

Recognized as a saint by both Chalcedonian and non-Chalcedonian Christians alike, Jacob of Sarug (d. 521) produced many narrative poems that have rarely been translated into English. Of his reported 760 metrical homilies, only about half survive. Part of a series of fascicles containing the bilingual Syriac-English editions of Saint Jacob of Sarug's homilies, this volume contains his homilies on the Six Days of Creation. In this fifth installment of the long Homily 71, On the Six Days of Creation, Jacob treats of the events of the fifth day, the creation from the waters of the various species of fish and reptiles, as well as the assorted types of birds and other winged creatures. God created them all in wisdom and in love, prepared everything that they would need and endowed them with the natural characteristics required for their particular type of life. Jacob highlights the fact that the creation of these animals on the fifth day to inhabit the land and water separated on the third day is a symbol of the Resurrection of Christ.
