It Still Hurts

“It Still Hurts” has taken me roughly two and a half years to write. It was inspired by a chance meeting and later very good friendship with a beautiful young girl, who I had the privilege to meet one afternoon in a local convenience store. A friendship was struck, even though I was old enough to be her father. It was later lost, hopefully not for ever, by the arrival of a man much closer to her age. So yet more attitudes and emotions of the Author, from rejection and depression knowing that without these feelings, he would not be inspired enough to be able to write his poems.

It Still Hurts is the personal, painful, yet inspiring account of a young boy's challenge to survive at the Florida Industrial School for Boys (later renamed the Dozier School) in Marianna, Florida. The story is told by an 84-year-old father to his youngest daughter who has tenderly encouraged him to share his story. This memoir also serves as an historical record of the atrocities that took place at the school many of which were kept secret for decades.
