Excerpt from History of the Eighty-First Regiment Ohio Infantry Volunteers, During the War of the Rebellion The design of producing this little work originated in the belief that such a record, in a permanent form, would be acceptable to the living as a memento of their suffering and services in the War of the Rebellion, and that it also might serve as a slight tribute to the memory of those gallant and heroic members of our Regiment who have laid their lives upon their Country's altar. Excerpt from The Story of a Regiment: A History of the Campaigns, and Associations in the Field, of the Sixth Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry In bringing to a completion the product of many weary hours' labor, extended over a period of more than two years, it would be indecent should I omit to acknowledge the extent of my indebtedness to a large number of friends for their generous cooperation, in furnishing data and materials of various kinds, as well as for the constant encouragement and sympathy which have made possible what could never otherwise have been accomplished, notwithstanding that my task has truly been a labor of love. I desire to thank them all most heartily; and if any of them turn from this volume with a feeling of a disappointment, it is no more than I have done very many times during its preparations, on account of the disparity between my design and the actual performance. The map of the Cheat Mountain region was prepared expressly for this work by Mr. George B. Nicholson (to whom my warmest thanks are due for great and constant assistance, in many different ways), and is, I believe, the only one extant that is worth the trouble of referring to, in connection with the history of the campaign there in the fall of 1861. I regret that it has been impossible, from pecuniary considerations, to introduce more maps, as at one time I hoped that I should be justified in doing; but this is of the less consequence, as good maps of Kentucky, Tennessee, etc., can readily be procured almost anywhere. Excerpt from The Military History of the 123d Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry In consenting to write the history of the organization, and the marches, skirmishes, battles and deeds of our brave old regiment, at this late date, is, I know, accept ing an undertaking from which anyone might well shrink; and yet to preserve on record the dear old story, the task has been cheerfully attempted. It is not expected that this book will be of interest to the general reader; to those only who participated in, or followed with loving 'eyes, its fortunes, will the dry details, which must necessarily often enter into its composition, be interesting, and without apology to the officers and men, of the 12 3d Ohio Volunteer Infantry, this book is offered as a true record of their soldier life. The 124th Regiment, Ohio Voluntary Infantry was a Union Army regiment set up in the summer of 1862, occasioned by the necessity for the "300,000 more" to put down the slaveholder's rebellion (of the American Civil War). This book is a historical account of the regiment's activities during the war, as written by soldier G. W. Lewis, who later served as the Regiment's Major. It captures their major campaigns such as the Campaign of Chattanooga, the Battle of Chickamauga, The Siege of Chattanooga, The Battle of Lookout Mountain, And the Storming of Missionary Ridge.
