Excerpt from History of the Bill Family Again, there are several families who do belong to ours who have within, perhaps fifty years, added the letter 8 to their names; in all such cases we have omitted this additional letter, always mentioning the fact, however, in the accounts given of those families. It seems desirable to preserve the name in its purity, and in that View of the subject have believed it our duty to pursue the course adopted. Excerpt from Memories of Buffalo Bill IT was more than a half century ago, May 1, 1865, to be exact. The twinge of early spring had not yet left the air, and I sat curled up in a big chair in front of the grate fire in our little home in Old Frenchtown, St. Louis. Excerpt from Anecdotes of "Buffalo Bill" That Have Never Appeared in Print My dear Col I have conceived the idea of writing a book, Anecdotes of Buffalo Bill thathave never appeared in print. I believe as well as anyone now living besides yourself, I am fitted to write this. It shall tell of our boyhood days, of days which we passed in the west, when the west was young; of the days when history was being made at the point of the pistol, and not infrequently at the end of a rope. Of the days of bad men and bad Indians. Many of the little stories you will recall and many of them will have been forgotten, but you'll recall them. Excerpt from The Glenns: A Family History In a merely worldly View, the reasoning of the last mentioned lady, that her son would probably be better cared for by his uncle than by her new husband and herself, was not far from correct. For no father ever watched more carefully or guarded more scrupulously the education of his son, than did Abram that of both his nephews. His 'want of experience and solitary habits may, in a measure, have unfitted him for the task of guide and protector; but so far as his knowledge and ability extended, no parent could exceed him in zeal and vigilance. If he erred culpably in anything, it was in allowing both his wards a rather free command of money. He thought, and very correctly, that denying them could but produce one of two re sults, it would either lower their standard of self-respect, thus drfing their characters an irreparable injury, by the comparison they would not fail to make between their own stinted allowance and the more liberal supply of their companions - or it would tempt them to equivocal and perhaps criminal means of obtaining that which their boyish feelings represented as indispensable. In either event their characters would be seriously, perhaps per manently Injured, and in the one case probably as vitally as in the other. He knew the pride of the race, and he was too sen sible a man not to know that what would ruin a boy of one temperament, would only develope and improve one of another. He had never fallen into the stupid, pedagogical mistake founded upon the astonishing wisdom of the truism, that boys are boys - that all children must be subjected alike to the same discipline. He was accordingly sensible that refusing his wards the means of gratifying their harmless, boyish wants, would so touch their pride and beat their naturally warm blood, that they might be hurried into faults for'whichyears of repentance could not atone. Excerpt from Douglas, Lincoln and the Nebraska Bill Let me anticipate by the reminder that the alleged offense of Douglas in the Nebraska compromise lay in substituting this interdiction of nature for the positive, but as Clay pointed out, temporary interdiction of a law of congress, known as the first, or Missouri, compromise. Excerpt from My Life With Buffalo Bill Mr. Sorenson drove steadily and as fast as the trail and the horses' stamina would let him. We pulled into Choteau just as the sun was sending its last lingering traces out Of the mountains to the west - a drooping, mournful red that seemed in tune with our low spirits. We had never before made the trip into Choteau in one day's drive, so we were all tuckered out. Pa's Old friend, John Miller, the liveryman, as always, let us sleep in the livery stable Office. Perhaps, if Ma had let me, I would have meandered out into the wonders Of the streets Of the town again for I had been to town only two or three times in my life. But Ma was too wise for that and I soon slept. 'once or twice during the night I woke to hear a horse stomp an iron shoe against the slivered boards Of his stall. Excerpt from Buffalo Bill: And His Adventures in the West Look well on the leading figure in that group. You will see him but this once, yet on his sad fate hinges all the wild and fearful realities which are to follow, drawn, to a very great extent, not from imagination, but from life itself.
