The Ohio 88th Infantry Regiment was organized in July, 1862, and mustered in October 27, 1862, under Colonel George W. Neff, it was placed on duty at Camp Chase, Columbus, Ohio. When Kirby Smith threatened Cincinnati the 88th moved to Covington; but soon returned to Camp Chase. A detachment served in West Virginia and Maryland, but returned to operate against John Morgan. In October, 1863, the Regiment was ordered on duty in Cincinnati, but again returned to Camp Chase, where it remained until mustered out July 3, 1865. This was a complete and well drilled organization and if given a chance would have done good service in the field. Companies Company A - Fairfield County Company B - Company C - Geauga County and Lake County Company D - many men from Mahoning County Company E - Guernsey County Company F - Company G - Company H - Company I - Company K - Pleasantville and Royalton

The Ohio 58th Infantry Regiment organized and entered the field in February, 1862, under Colonel V. Bausenwein, who soon being discharged was succeeded by Colonels Rumpel, Dister, Jackson and Frisner, successively. It first engaged the enemy at Fort Donelson, and next at Shiloh. It moved upon Corinth, and after the evacuation marched to Memphis and thence to Arkansas. In October it moved into Missouri for recuperation and in December joined Sherman's first assault upon Vicksburg, where the Regiment was lead by the gallant Colonel Dister over the Rebel works. Colonel Dister was killed upon the parapets with many other gallant officers and men. In January, 1863, it took part in the capture of Arkansas Post, and in April joined Grant's Vicksburg campaign, fighting at Grand Gulf with severe loss. It was at this time transferred to the army operating on the Lower Mississippi, and in September returned to Vicksburg, performing guard duty until mustered out January 14, 1865. Company A -Hancock County. Captain James C. Henley. Lieutenants George Orman and Henry C. Sites. (Soon became Company K of the Eighty-Fifth Company B -Hancock County Cuyahoga County Company C -Hancock County Cuyahoga County Company D -Hancock County Cuyahoga County Company E -Cuyahoga County Company F - Cuyahoga County Company G - Cuyahoga County Company I - Pickaway County, Franklin County, and Fairfield County. Captain Samuel M. Morrison; Lieutenants William Roby and Stephen Defenbaugh. Company K: - Fairfield County. Recruited from near Pleasantville and Royalton principally. Captain James C. Henley. First Lieutenant Henry E. Hoew. Second Lieutenant Harlow Park.

The Ohio 38th Infantry Regiment was organized at Defiance, from July 24, 1861, to April 12, 1862, to serve for three years, and was first ordered into active service in Kentucky. After various marches, covering a wide scope of country, it participated in the battle of Perryville and afterward in the campaign in Kentucky. It fought at Stone's River, then continued throughout the Atlanta Campaign and the March to the Sea, ending with war in North Carolina. The 38th lost during service 8 Officers and 132 Enlisted men killed and mortally wounded and 2 Officers and 227 Enlisted men by disease. The Ohio 77th Infantry Regiment Organized in the fall of 1861, under Colonel Jesse Hildebrand, it reported to General Sherman at Paducah in February 1862. In April it participated both days in the battle of Shiloh, with heavy loss; and took part in the siege of Corinth until the evacuation when it moved westward, operating in Northern Mississippi and arriving at Memphis in July. It was ordered to Alton, Illinois in August, where it remained until July 1863, then moved to Helena, Arkansas. In January, 1864, the Regiment re-enlisted and went to Ohio on veteran furlough. In March it joined the Red River expedition and met with disaster. It took part in the capture of Mobile and then went to the Rio Grande where it served until mustered out March 8, 1866, the veterans having performed over four years of service.
