One Of these papers, Professor Geddes on the Homeric Problem, ' I have reprinted as an Appendix to the Essay on Mr. Glad stone's Homer. In it I wish very distinctly to call attention to the views Of the Aberdeen Professor, without as yet pledging myself either to accept or to reject them. The other, on The Primaeval Archaeology Of Rome, ' appears as a distinct Essay. It consists Of such parts Of an article SO headed, the fruit of my first visit to Rome in 1873, as did not consist Of mere temporary criticism. In both Of these pieces, subjects already treated Of in the series are treated of again, to some extent from new lights. I have therefore cut out some parts Of the Essay on Mommsen's History of Home. In the other Essays I have done little more than add and strike out a few notes and make a few verbal improvements.
