Greek Elegy And Iambus

A selection of the work of ten poets with detailed introduction and linguistic, literary and cultural commentary suitable for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students, but also of interest to scholars. Includes some major pieces, such as the recently discovered Plataea elegy of Simonides and Telephus elegy of Archilochus.

Volume II. Part II. Iambic Poetry. Archilochus (sixth century B.C.), famous composer of elegies, hymns, etc. -- more than 200 fragments, some substantial. (We include the remarkable 'Archilochus Monument' and the work done on the text by Edmonds). Semonides of Amorgos -- more than 40 fragments (one is a poem of 118 lines); Hermippus, Scythinus.

For over two centuries, iambus and elegy attracted some of the finest poetic talents in Greek history and played a major role in public and private life, surviving as living forms into the fourth century BC. This edited collection provides the first comprehensive exploration devoted specifically to iambus and elegy, offering an important insight into the key issues within current research on the genres. Chapters by leading international scholars in the fieldexamine the forms from a broad range of perspectives and provide a solid foundation for future research.

The Greek lyric, elegiac, and iambic poets of the two centuries from 650 to 450 BC - Archilochus and Alcman, Sappho and Mimnermus, Anacreon, Simonides, and the rest - produced some of the finest poetry of antiquity, perfect in form, spontaneous in expression, reflecting all the joys andanxieties of their personal lives and of the societies in which they lived. This new poetic translation by a leading expert captures the nuances of meaning and the whole spirit of this poetry as never before. It is not merely a selection but covers all the surviving poems and intelligible fragments, apart from the works of Pindar and Bacchylides, and includes a number ofpieces not previously translated.
