Gender Wayang Music Of Bapak I Wayan Loceng From Sukawati Bali Parts

This critical edition is at once a memorial to Bapak I Wayan Loceng following his passing in October, 2006, and a tribute to his great musical genius. This edition documents nine compositions from the esteemed Balinese gender wayang or shadow play repertoire. The music documented derives from the musical mastery of Bapak I Wayan Loceng (1926–2006), arguably the most renowned gender wayang expert in Bali, who lived in the village of Sukawati. This edition places the music within a historical, cultural, and biographical context and introduces a broad theoretical framework that contains a new definition for the discipline of ethnomusicology, and substantial discussion of the genres of musical biography, musical ethnography, and ethnomusicology of the individual. This edition will introduce the reader to pertinent scholarly perspectives, offer biographical information pertaining to Bapak I Wayan Loceng, delineate the cultural concepts and contexts for performance and background of the shadow play tradition in Bali, and clarify key aspects of the music itself.

While many Western scholars have discussed the technical aspects of Balinese music or the traditional contexts for performance, little has been written in Western languages about Balinese discourses on their music. This dissertation seeks to understand the experience of music in Bali according to Balinese voices through an analysis of oral and written dialogues on music, mainly by musicians and dalangs (shadow play puppeteers) from the village of Sukawati, scholars, teachers, administrators and students from the Indonesian College of the Arts (STSI) in the City of Denpasar. The study examines the influence of modernization on the traditional arts and their role in society. A concentration on Balinese discourses enables individual performers and scholars to represent themselves to a greater extent than previously seen in ethnomusicological scholarship, making this study more of a critical discussion among equals than a Western interpretation of 'others'. This approach permits a rare view into contemporary Balinese conceptions and practices of music.

My experience as a university lecturer in multi-cultural environments (England) shows that most students always dread this area of their study before the classes' start, which actually surprises me because I found this area of study interesting during my study days and as a lecturer. But quite remarkably, at the end of the semester, with my systematic analysis, my students end up liking the course, and it becomes a favourite course to them in all institutions where I have worked. Hence I decided to publish my lecture notes in the form of a textbook. The ultimate aim of this book is to: "Provide students with knowledge, skills and confidence required in understanding cost and management accounting for both accounting and non-accounting students at the university degree and professional examination levels." The primary focus is to discuss fundamentals of costing to form a solid foundation to management accounting courses at undergraduate, post-graduate and professional examination levels. The areas covered are presented in clear English language with clear and helpful layouts and formats on how to solve questions on a systematic and consistent basis. Accounting students hoping to progress to professional examinations after university often faced a daunting challenge. From my experience of delivering lectures on ACCA and CIMA professional studies, graduates do struggle with and are even afraid to start the professional exams. Some good and confident graduates that start their professional exam are often disappointed to know that they are short of knowledge required at that level and always have to do extra work. It is also the aim of this textbook to bridge the gap between academic and professional studies by explaining fundamental rules and principles in a more practical manner using professional examination questions to illustrate all the fundamental knowledge discussed, hereby exposing students to professional exams and linking their academic knowledge to the professional environment. I sincerely hope that this book will be of great help to undergraduate, post-graduate and professional exam students.

Integrating the analysis of gender and music with that of aesthetics, this study of the musical synergy between the puppeteer and his female accompanist describes the ways in which shifting gender constructions have helped to shape and change Central Javanese music and theatre performance practice while throwing new light on the history of Javanese gender relations and culture, as well as on the aesthetics of Central Javanese shadow-puppet theatre.
