Excerpt from The Forests, Forest Lands, and Forest Products of Eastern North Carolina The policy of the average citizen appears to be based upon the theory that our natural resources are inexhaustible, and that we should get all out of them we can to-day and let the future take care of itself. And so thoroughly grounded are these notions in our public and private policy that it is exceedingly difficult to secure the adoption of any plan which runs counter to them. But fortunately, in the matter of our forests, their preservation for use by a future generation need not prohibit the utilization of the valuable timber now standing by the present generation. It only demands that while we cut and make use of this timber we protect the young growth, and look to the restocking of our waste lands with valuable trees, pnd thus make the forest valuable for future generations also. Excerpt from Foreign Trade Study of the Forest Products Industries The forest resources of the world are largely an unknown quantity, the only available figures are given in total acres of forest lands. Such figures really convey little, if any, information as to the world supply of saw timber. While it is known that Russia, Africa, South and Central America contain vast forests, not even estimates in board feet measure have been made of the amount of saw timber available in these remote regions. The above 1928 figures are taken from the Forest Service survey. Other figures are from the Bureau of the Census. Excerpt from The Forests, Forest Lands, and Forest Products of Eastern North Carolina, Vol. 5 The law inaugurating the Geological Survey provides for the investigation of the timber as well as the mineral interests of the State and in carrying out this provision a systematic examination of the forests was begun in 1891 and has been carried on since that time. The plan adopted in this work embodies a fourfold investigation: first, as to the existing forest resources; second, as to how these resources can be utilized to the greatest advantage with out involving the destruction of the forests; third, as to how the waste lands of the State can be continuously restocked with valua ble trees, and thus our forest wealth perpetuated; and fourth, as to what can be done to encourage the development in the State of enterprises which will manufacture into finished products a larger portion of our timber instead of shipping to other States our crude. Materials for manufacture there. We have found, as will be shown in this Report and others which are to follow at an early date, that our forest resources are. Considerable: and they are now attracting lumbermen and capital from many sections of the country. The lumbering industry in the State is already a large one and is increasing in magnitude; indeed, already the timber is being cut with such rapidity that we mav fairly ask ourselves the question, how long it will be before our forest wealth, like that of many other States, becomes a matter of the past. And we mav also ask ourselves the question, whether it is possible that these resources can be utilized now and at the same time our forest wealth be perpetuated. Excerpt from The Forest-Land Owners of Kentucky The most recent forest survey of Ken tucky - 1975 - provided estimates of forest area and timber volume by broad owner categories (kingsley and Powell That survey did not, however, estimate the timber volume or acreage of commercial forest land that is available for har vesting. The report also did not describe forest land owners, their reasons for owning forest land, or their attitudes toward timber harvesting, forest management, and the recreational use of their lands by the public. Such information is useful to public agencies for planning and organizing forestry-related pro grams; to forest industries for locating available timber; and to others for learning more about the motivations and objectives of forest-land owners. Ninety-two percent of the commercial forest land in Kentucky is in private hands, and an in-depth look at the private forest-land owners will provide a better understanding of the forest resources of the State.
