Factors Affecting Occupational Safety And Health Of Foreign Farm Workers In Nordic Countries

This report is the result of a project financed by the Working Environment Committee of the Nordic Council of Ministers with the purpose to identify essential factors affecting occupational safety and health of foreign agricultural workers in the Nordic countries. The aim is that this information will be used in developing national occupational safety and health programs, educating farmers and employers and finding strategies to improve safety communication in the agricultural sector in all the Nordic countries. In the process of nation building, the health of the working population becomes a key factor. With the introduction of new technologies, foreign labour and changes in working patterns, the health of the working population will be affected. Health care workers, administrators and politicians will be confronted with these occupational health issues.This book outlines the various occupational health issues in national development and proposes a system of planning for the health services for the working population. It is the result of a two week ICOH Seminar where international experts addressed the issue of developing occupational health services for various countries.

Intended to provide a framework for a research agenda on migrant and seasonal farmworker health and to serve as a resource for all those concerned with farmworker health, this report examines farmworker health data gathered within the past 10-15 years. The document contains the following material: (1) an overview of the major occupational health problems reported by migrant health centers; (2) a summary of the literature on each agricultural health problem presented; (3) information on ongoing research projects on farmworker occupational health; (4) recommendations for research priorities on farmworker health; (5) information on occupational safety and health laws covering agricultural workers; and (6) a resource guide on farmworker occupational safety and health, including training materials. One-third of the report is devoted to specific occupational health problems including communicable diseases, urinary tract infections/kidney problems, heat stress, pesticide-related illness, dermatitis, eye problems, accidents, noninfectious respiratory diseases, cancer, hazards for children in the fields, and hazards for pregnant women and/or the newborn. Abstract: An attractive working environment that is inclusive and prevents work-related health problems is important to ensure that as many as possible can participate in the working life. During the Swedish presidency in the Nordic Council of Ministers 2013, the focus is on youth. This also includes the working conditions of young workers. This report has been prepared for a conference that is held in October 2013 by the Swedish Presidency of cooperation with the Swedish ILO Committee and The Nordic Institute for Advanced Training in Occupational Health (NIVA).
