Essays in english language teaching includes a selection of articles which are based on edited and peer-reviewed papers delivered at the "I Simposio de Enseñanza y Aprendizaje del Inglés: el método comunicativo en el año 2000" held at the University of Oviedo from 19 to 21 November, 1998, together with two plenary keynote lectures: Carme Muñoz's (University of Barcelona): "The effects of age on instructed foreign language acquisition"; and Ignacio Palacios' (University of Santiago de Compostela): "What's there to know about the learning of a foreign language?". No summary is provided as we hope they should be compulsory/compulsive reading.

This volume highlights some of the main issues and questions surrounding the field of second language (L2) writing, and includes 14 chapters authored by contributors from a wide variety of geographical regions including, but not limited to, North America, Europe, Australia, and Asia. The authors are all experienced L2 writing researchers, and their contributions will enhance the reader’s understanding of issues related to L2 writing. To the teacher: As it often happens to teachers, we find something interesting we'd like to try, and in the process, discover that in order to implement it successfully, we must tweak it, change it, and frankly, turn it into a completely different activity in order to meet the needs of our students. But as it (also) often happens, teachers wear too many hats, and the one of "curious researcher who wants to continue learning and bring that knowledge into the classroom" is the hat we get to wear the least, because of classroom and teaching demands. I get it. To the student: The strains of the classroom make it difficult, for teachers as well as students, to invest in private reading of auxiliary texts. Published in 1978, this is a concise and practical guide to the use of linguistic theory and analytical techniques in English language teaching at secondary and tertiary levels of education. Much has been written in this area in the past, but previous emphasis has most often been theoretical. This book is concerned with the realities of teaching, and each technique recommended is explained by reference to actual examples of students’ writing and speech. The underlying theory is discussed only when this serves to clarify practice. John Keen demonstrates how students’ existing grasp of the uses and processes of English can provide a reliable base from which to develop their language skills in a meaningful and effective way. His own experience has convinced him that the sympathetic use of linguistic insights can help in teaching the conventions of spelling and grammar, developing students’ sensitivity to meaning in language and enabling them to use language resourcefully in a variety of contexts – including writing coherently and at length on particular topics. The Bullock Report recommended that language study should be part of every teacher’s training. This book indicates some directions that such a language study might take.

In recent years, the number of nonnative speakers of English in colleges and universities in North America has increased dramatically. As a result, more and more writing teachers have found themselves working with these English as a Second Language (ESL) students in writing classes that are designed primarily with monolingual, native-English-speaking students in mind. Since the majority of institutions require these students to enroll in writing courses at all levels, it is becoming increasingly important for all writing teachers to be aware of the presence and special linguistic and cultural needs of ESL writers. This increase in the ESL population has, over the last 40 years, been paralleled by a similar growth in research on ESL writing and writing instruction--research that writing teachers need to be familiar with in order to work effectively with ESL writers in writing classrooms of all levels and types. Until recently, however, this body of knowledge has not been very accessible to writing teachers and researchers who do not specialize in second language research and instruction. This volume is an attempt to remedy this problem by providing a sense of how ESL writing scholarship has evolved over the last four decades. It brings together 15 articles that address various issues in second language writing in general and ESL writing in particular. In selecting articles for inclusion, the editors tried to take a principled approach. The articles included in this volume have been chosen from a large database of publications in second language writing. The editors looked for works that mirrored the state of the art when they were published and made a conscious effort to represent a wide variety of perspectives, contributions, and issues in the field. To provide a sense of the evolution of the field, this collection is arranged in chronological order.
