Many of the authors have benefited from Prof. Lange-Bertalot´s profound knowledge of diatoms in general, and his floristic skills in particular. The impact of his work on diatom research has been extraordinary, with important implications for ecology (from water pollution to climate change), biodiversity and conservation sciences. This has been due in large part to the breadth and depth of Prof. Lange-Bertalot_s research record in four areas: evaluation of water quality using diatoms, floristics with a focus on Europe, floristics with a worldwide perspective, and synthetic work to organize and integrate these other studies. This tremendous volume honors Professor Horst Lange-Bertalot, one of the pre-eminent diatom taxonomists. This Beiheft of Nova Hedwigia features twenty contributions by more than 40 authors, representing the entire range of Prof. Le Cohu's work and interests. Diatom communities are a popular tool for monitoring environmental conditions, past and present, and are commonly used in studies of water quality. High-resolution images of phytoplankton cells such as diatoms or desmids, which are useful for monitoring water quality, can now be provided by digital microscopes, facilitating the automated analysis and identification of specimens. Conventional approaches are based on optical microscopy; however, manual image analysis is impractical due to the huge diversity of this group of microalgae and its great morphological plasticity. As such, there is a need for automated recognition techniques for diagnostic tools (e.g. environmental monitoring networks, early warning systems) to improve the management of water resources and decision-making processes. Describing the entire workflow of a bioindicator system, from capture, analysis and identification to the determination of quality indices, this book provides insights into the current state-of-the-art in automatic identification systems in microscopy.
