Corpus Analysis For Descriptive And Pedagogical Purposes

The eighteen chapters in this volume look at the use of corpus analysis for descriptive and pedagogical purposes, focusing on contexts where English is employed by specialists in the professions and academia. They also debate some of the challenges arising from the complex relationship between linguistic theory, data-mining tools and statistical methods.

This volume includes methodological considerations and descriptions of some of the texts compiled in The Corpus of English Philosophy Texts (CEPhiT), together with a number of pilot studies that demonstrate how the corpus can be used to investigate English philosophy writing in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, from a synchronic and a diachronic perspective. CEPhiT is part of the Coruña Corpus of English Scientific Writing (CC). The sampling method employed requires the collection of extracts of ca. 10,000 words. This method has been followed in CETA and CEPhiT, with samples from 40 different authors in the latter, both from Europe and North America. Text selection is based on some extralinguistic criteria, such as year of publication, sex, geographical provenance and text-types/genres. The corpus contains samples belonging to six different genre categories. This taxonomy, as well as some other extralinguistic information, can be used to search the corpus. CEPhiT, together with the Coruña Corpus Tool purpose-designed software by IrLab, was originally made available with the volume on CD-rom. This book provides a survey of issues and studies on ‘applied’ corpus linguistics across two crucial decades, 2000-2020, which have marked enormous advancements in the field of corpora studies. At present, corpus linguistics and its applications form a well-established field of research which deserves special attention by English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students and practitioners actively engaged in the study of the English language across the ‘three circles’. The original core of this volume drew on EFL data, and later progressed to include specific topics concerning English as a Second Language (ESL), as well as a first/native language. Contemporary society has witnessed radical changes in the field of communications in terms of how messages and meanings are disseminated. The papers published in this volume were originally presented at the Third North American Symposium on Corpus Linguistics and Language Teaching held on 23-25 March 2001 at the Park Plaza Hotel in Boston, Massachusetts. Each paper analyses some aspect of language use or structure in one or more of the many linguistic corpora now available. The number of different corpora investigated in the book is a real testament to the progress that has been made in recent years in developing new corpora, particularly spoken corpora, as over half of the papers deal either wholly or partially with the analysis of spoken data.
