In 1999 the American Board of Interventional Medicine is offering, for the first time, what will be an annual certification examination in Interventional Cardiology. Board certification is designed to recognize excellence among physicians specializing in interventional cardiology. Interventional Cardiology: The Essentials for the Boards is the first book to be written in accordance with the American Board of Interventional Medicine’s own guidelines. The book is structured to accurately represent the balance of subject matter that can be expected on the certification examination. Care is taken to cover the essential points in each individual topic, highlighting state-of-the-art therapy and unresolved issues. Most chapters are presented in a question-and-answer format, along with a chapter of clinical case descriptions covering a broad range of clinical and interventional problems. A special chapter of "Interventional Cardiology Pearls" provides condensed, easily digested summaries of the most useful information in the previous chapters. In addition, it is the first book of its kind to include a detailed Table of Contents and a Subject Index, making it easy for the examinee to locate specific topics. This book will be of great help to interventional cardiologist specialists preparing for the board certification exams. General cardiologists, cardiology nurses, cardiac catheterization lab support staff, and general cardiology fellows interested in increasing their understanding of intervention and related topics will also find this work useful.

This concise practical guide is designed to facilitate the clinical decision-making process in the management of rotational atherectomy procedures by reviewing a number of cases and defining the various diagnostic and management decisions open to clinicians. It will be well illustrated but concise, enabling the reader to obtain relevant information regarding both standard and unusual cases in a rapid, easy to digest format. Each case will also include a narrative description and patient management tips. Rotational atherectomy (‘rotablator’) is used to treat heavily calcified lesions within coronary arteries at the time of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Lesions that are inadequately treated may not be dilatable by balloons; and stents that are implanted in such lesions are at high risk for acute stent thrombosis and stent failure. However, rotablator therapy is high risk and present unique challenges to the interventionalists. Complications are generally uncommon. However, when they do occur, they tend to be disastrous. In this case book, we present a series of rotablator cases: basic, complex cases, difficult cases, complications and unusual situations. Although PCI operators all have some degree of experience with this therapy, each operator is unlikely to have significant experience given the cost of the device and the risk involved. Therefore, this book will provide interventionalists with a valuable compendium of cases which can help them in the management of patients whom they plan to treat with rotational atherectomy.

Complications of Interventional Cardiovascular Procedures is a comprehensive atlas that covers the potential complications for the full range of interventional procedures. The emphasis throughout is on a practical, useful presentation with an "atlas" type of format. Each complication is presented first with a case example: case description; how it was dealt with; why it happened; and a discussion of whether and how it could have been avoided in this case. Following is a broader presentation providing more context on why the specific complication may occur; how to anticipate it; how to avoid or minimize it if possible and how to address it if it occurs. Key points in bulleted format are presented as "Lessons" highlighted throughout the text. Complications of Interventional Cardiovascular Procedures is concise and presents information succinctly for efficient learning and quick clinical reference. The book is the last of a three-volume project, aiming at providing unique case reports (20 cases per volume) of supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias encountered in clinical practice. It focuses on the treatment of ventricular arrhythmias both in structurally normal hearts and in patients with structural heart disease such as ischaemic heart disease, arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy and dilated cardiomyopathy. The cases presented were performed with the CARTO electroanatomical mapping system, which provides numerous images that help the reader to better understand the characteristics of the arrhythmia. The figures, which represent the heart of the authors' work, are built around suggestive figures acquired during the patients' hospitalisation and help place the invasive treatment of arrhythmias in a clinical context. Electrocardiograms, Holter ECGs, signal-averaged ECGs, chest X-rays, transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography images, MRI, CT scans and coronary angiography are provided when relevant to present the patient's condition. Short video clips with maps of activation of the atria or ventricles during the studied arrhythmia complete the information provided. Each chapter includes questions and answers and key messages at the end of each case, making it an invaluable tool for cardiologists, clinical cardiac electrophysiologists and interventional cardiac electrophysiologists in training, as well as anyone interested in learning more.
