Ils arrivèrent adroitement à leur but en lui faisant observer que son esprit classique et attique ses traits de gaieté délicate et son heureux ta lent pour le dialogue tombaient dans le burlesque et dans le trivial par suite de ce déguisement insignifiant, et que ces qualités feraient bien plus d'impression s'il trouvait des auxiliaires dans la vivacité de ses yeux et l'expression de ses traits naturels. Ils n'eurent pas de peine à intéresser la vanité de l'acteur au point de l'en gager à en faire l'essai. Il joua Arlequin à visage décoù vert mais on trouva généralement qu'il avait complè tement échoué. Il avait perdu la hardiesse qu'il devait au sentiment de son incognito, et avec elle tout cet esprit imperturbable de raillerie qui dans le principe, donnait de la vivacité à son jeu. L'acteur maudit ses conseillers, et reprit son masque grotesque; mais on dit qu'il ne put jamais retrouver cette légèreté insouciante et heureuse que la conscience de son déguisement lui avait prètée autrefois. Peut - ètre l'auteur de Waverley est - il maintenant sur le point de courir un danger du mème genre, et de risquer sa popularité pour avoir quitté son incognito. Ce n'est certainement pas un essai volontaire comme celui d'arlequin; car, dans l'origine, j'avais l'intention de ne jamais me faire connaître, pendant ma vie, pour l'auteur de ces ouvrages, et les manuscrits en étaient conservés avec soin par d'autres plutôt que par moi, afin de pouvoir fournir les preuves nécessaires de la vérité lorsque le temps serait arrivé de la faire con naître.
