Choro Conversations

The term choro is a complex expression of a genre, a style and a cast. This diversity is complemented by regionality and forms a special appearance with the choro tradition in the Brazilian state of Maranhão. This work represents the first attempt to systematically explore this choro and to open it as a contribution to the basic research aboutthe music in Maranhão. This Choro Maranhense is a living tradition that is very receptive to neighboring styles of music and sets itself apart from other choro styles in Brazil in its musical practice. The practice of this music of the Northeast has a long history and was influential for the entire music of the country. Notwithstanding the dispute of domination between the centers of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo in the southeast and the centers of the northeast, such as São Luís and Maranhão, the studies show that this choro has many variations and imitations of the folklore of Maranhão, such as Bumba-meu-Boi or Lelê, which give this choro tradition a completely different picture in comparison to the classical models of Pixinguinha. This work is intended as a basis for further research and as a contribution to the study of music in northeastern Brazil.

"Embodiment" is a concept that crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries. However, it is a contested term, and the literature is fragmented, particularly within Higher Education. This has resulted in silos of work that are not easily able to draw on previous or related knowledge in order to support and progress understanding. Conversations on Embodiment Across Higher Education brings a cohesive understanding to congruent approaches by drawing on discussions between academics to explore how they have used embodiment in their work. This book brings academics from fields including dance, drama, education, anthropology, early years, sport, sociology and philosophy together, to begin conversations on how their understandings of embodiment have impacted on their teaching, practice and research. Each chapter explores an aspect of embodiment according to a particular disciplinary or theoretical perspective, and begins a discussion with a contributor with another viewpoint. This book will appeal to academics, researchers and postgraduate students from a diverse range of disciplinary areas, as evidenced by the backgrounds of the contributors. It will be of particular interest to those in the fields of education, sociology, anthropology, dance and drama as well as other movement or body-orientated professionals who are interested in the ideas of embodiment.​

The Art of Conversation is a major contribution to the social history of language - a relatively new field which has become the focus of lively interdisciplinary debate in recent years. Drawing on the work of sociolinguists and others, Burke uses their concept while reserving the right to qualify their theories where the historical record makes this seem appropriate. Like the sociolinguists, Burke in concerned with the way language varies according to who is communicating to whom, on what occasion, in what medium and on what topic. Unlike many sociolinguists, Burke adds a historical dimension, treating language as an inseparable part of social history. The Art of Conversation will be of great interest to students and scholars in social and cultural history, linguistics, the sociology of language and the ethnography of communication.
