This report presents a summary of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data collected during the Coordinate Eastern Arctic Experiment (CEAREX) by the Naval Air Development Center (NADC) and the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan (ERIM). ERIM scientists on board the ice-strengthened vessel, POLARBJORN and stationed at Andoya, Norway, planned and coordinate the P-3 SAR collection flight and performed real-time image analysis of sea ice and open water to facilitate ship operations. Mosaics of the optically processed data are presented along with manually derived geophysical information. In addition, detailed radar and aircraft parameters are given for each data collection. CEAREX, SAR, Radar, Sea Ice, Polar Oceanography.

This report describes the SAR data collection and processing activities performed to date for the SAR Internal Wave Signature Experiment (SARSEX). During SARSEX, a total of 88 passes of X- and L-band SAR data were collected over two test areas by the ERIM/CCRS CV-580 SAR System. These data were collected over an instrumented ocean site located 100 km south of Long Island, NY and a calibrated reflector array site. A description of the CV-580 SAR System is presented. The location of each SAR pass, along with a listing of the SAR and aircraft parameters, are given. All SAR data have been precision optically processed and reviewed. A selected subset of data have been digitally processed and a preliminary engineering assessment of the quality of the SAR imagery performed. The results of this assessment are presented, as are representative examples of optically-and digitally-processed SAR imagery collected during SARSEX. Finally, the analysis plans for the SAR data are discussed, including a presentation of the procedures to calibrate the SAR imagery. Keywords include: Synthetic aperture radar; Oceanography; Data collection; Data processing analysis plans; Internal waves; and CV-580 SAR.

The Advanced Study Institute Ice Physics in the Natural and Endangered Environ ment was held at Acquafredda di Maratea, Italy, from September 7 to 19, 1997. The ASI was designed to study the broad range of ice science and technology, and it brought together an appropriately interdisciplinary group of lecturers and students to study the many facets of the subject. The talks and poster presentations explored how basic molecular physics of ice have important environmental consequences, and, con versely, how natural phenomena present new questions for fundamental study. The of lectures discusses these linkages, in order that overall unity of following sunimary the subject and this volume can be perceived. Not all of the lecturers and participants were able to contribute a written piece, but their active involvement was crucial to the success of the Institute and thereby influenced the content of the volume. We began the Institute by retracing the history of the search for a microscopic un derstanding of melting. Our motivation was straightforward. Nearly every phenome non involving ice in the environment is influenced by the change of phase from solid to liquid or vice-versa. Hence, a sufficiently deep physical picture of the melting tran sition enriches our appreciation of a vast array of geophysical and technical problems.
